The 5th seeded Brown Bears men's lacrosse team is set to take on Johns Hopkins on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Brown's Stevenson-Pincince Field.

Like Duke and North Carolina are to college basketball, Johns Hopkins is one of the most storied lacrosse programs in NCAA history. The Blue Jays are making their 44th tournament appearance and are seeking their 10th National Championship.

"Hosting Johns Hopkins is very meaningful to our fan base and alumni base that understand what their program has accomplished. For us, the objective is to not think about that and just treat them like our next opponent and play our game," said Brown Head Coach Lars Tiffany.

The last time Brown and Johns Hopkins played came in 2009 when the Blue Jays beat the Bears 12-11 in overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The last Brown win over Johns Hopkins came in 1971.

However, in this game, it is Brown with the home field advantage.

Home Cooking

Brown's 5th seed earned them home field advantage in the first round, and in fact, the university will host the second round as well, whether Brown is there or not.

Saturday's game will mark the first time since 1995 that the Bears have played an NCAA Tournament home game.

"It doesn't happen often here that Brown gets to host an NCAA events. We are happy that we were able to get a high seed and have this chance but we haven't done anything yet," said Brown Head Coach Lars Tiffany.

Brown lost one game at home all season and it came last week in the first round of the Ivy League tournament against Harvard. Brown turned the ball over 16 times in that including 6 in the 2nd quarter and 5 in the 4th quarter.

"I don't worry about the turnovers, with the way we play, we are going to have turnovers. I am more worried about shot selection. If we are taking bad shots from far out that lets them turn the ball the other way quickly then those are just like turnovers," Tiffany said. He added "we want to rise into the chaos but not be chaotic ourselves."

Dylan Molloy

For the Bears to win the game Tiffany says, "we need to play really good team defense because Johns Hopkins offense is outstanding. We want to play aggressive but stay away from man down situations because their man up is one of the best in the country."

Brown will also rely on Dylan Molloy, who tallied 106 points so far this season, which ranks him 9th in the NCAA record book for most points in a season. For his career, Molloy has tallied 147 goals, 90 assists and 237 points and counting.

"Dylan Molloy is certainly proving to be one of the best players in the country, maybe the best player in the country. He draws a lot of attention and that creates openings for other guys or himself. We are going to lean heavily on him to lead our offense on Saturday," Tiffany said.

Molloy leads the country in assists and points per game while ranking third in goals with 3.5 per game, needing just four goals to become Brown's all-time leading goal scorer.

Game Information

Brown and Johns Hopkins will do battle for the 12th time in the history of the two programs.

Game time is set for 5 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.

The winner of this game will face the winner of the Yale vs. Navy game next Saturday, May 21, at Brown Stadium.
