Boston 2024 To Support Statewide Olympic Ballot Referendum
Tuesday, March 24, 2015
Boston 2024 Chairman John Fish announced Tuesday that the group will seek a statewide vote in November 2016 on Boston's Olympic and Paralympic bid. Fish made the announcement Tuesday morning during a speech to the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
"Boston 2024 believes that the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be good for Boston, and will create thousands of jobs, drive economic development, and serve as a catalyst for the long-term plans of Boston,” Fish said. “As we pursue this goal, we are committed to the highest level of transparency and accountability. For those reasons, Boston 2024 is announcing today that we will gather signatures to put Boston’s Olympic and Paralympic bid to a statewide vote in November of 2016. Prior to this vote we will be working with the people of Boston and Massachusetts to build the best bid possible - one that reflects the best of our state and the Olympic and Paralympic movement. Then, the people of Massachusetts can make the final decision on whether we have achieved those goals.”
“The bid will be stronger with a majority of citizens of Massachusetts and Boston in support,” added Boston 2024 CEO Rich Davey. “We're very confident that the Games will improve our city and our state with great jobs and great economic opportunity. It will showcase the best of Boston on a world stage. We look forward to making our case.”

He also pledged that Boston 2024 would not go forward with its bid if the measure does not pass or if a majority of voters in the city of Boston do not support it.
“We believe our bid will be fiscally and socially responsible and will set a new international standard for a sustainable Games,” Fish said. “It is our intent to bring the Games back to the United States and host an event that will propel the Olympic and Paralympic movements forward for a new generation.”
In January 2015, the United States Olympic Committee selected Boston as its applicant city to host the 2024 Olympic & Paralympic Games. The IOC will select the host city for the 2024 Games in summer 2017.
