Andrade, Faxon, Quigley All On Top At CVS

Day 1 of the 2012 CVS/Caremark Charity Classic is in the books and some interesting story lines are developing that should make for an interesting final round on Tuesday.
Three teams share the lead at 9-under par through round one including tournament co-hosts Brad Faxon and Billy Andrade. Joining the pair atop the leader board are the twosomes of Dana Quigley and Julie Inkster as well as Jay Haas and Morgan Pressel. Just one shot off the pace at 8-under par is the team of Corey Pavin and Lexi Thompson.
What makes things so interesting heading into Tuesday’s final round is the fact that neither Andrade or Faxon has ever won the event that they have hosted for the last 14 years.

Quigley and Inkster are the oldest twosome in the event, but that’s not why Quigley is the emotional favorite of local golf fans.
The Champions Tour star has had to endure a year that no parent ever wants to deal with. His son Devon was involved in a serious car accident last December in Florida when his BMW slammed into the back of a semi while he was returning from a birthday party.
After the jaws of life were used to extract Devon Quigley from the wreckage, he was put into a medically induced coma due to severe swelling to his brain which resulted from the blunt trauma to his head.
The good news is that Devon survived that frightful night and is no longer in a coma. He is awake and alert. Unfortunately, he cannot speak. However, Devon can respond by answering questions with his eyes.
“He’s doing about as well as can be expected considering the circumstances,” a cheerful Dana Quigley said prior to teeing off Monday morning at Rhode Island Country Club.
Winning for son Devon tomorrow would be quite an accomplishment for always classy Dana Quigley. The prize money could certainly help with all of the medical bills that have resulted from the accident. If he were to win, there wouldn’t be a dry eye in the house at RICC.
But a victory won’t come easy. Nobody knows the golf course better than Brad Faxon. He and Billy Andrade are the only all-male twosome and should be a factor right to the very end.
While Haas and Pressel will also be a formidable duo to overcome, the team to keep a close eye on may that of Pavin and Thompson. Thompson is one of the longer hitters in this year’s event and with Tuesday’s final round being a scramble format, she and Pavin could be tough to beat.
Tuesday’s second and final round tees off at 9am.

-The twosome of Annika Sorenstam and Peter Jacobsen struggled to a score of +2 on day one and are 11 shots off the pace heading into the final round. They carded 3 bogies (3rd, 5th, 16th) and just 1 birdie (8th) on Monday.
-LGPA star Lexi Thompson wowed the crowd on the first tee Monday with her surprising length. Thompson’s club head speed seems much faster than the average LPGA Tour player and similar to many of the men on the PGA Tour. She hit one of the longest drives of the day on the first hole at Rhode Island Country Club where the men and women both hit from the same set of tees.
-There were 2 skins captured on Monday that were worth a total of $12,500 a piece. The team of Dana Quigley and Juli Inkster captured one with an eagle on the par-4 4th hole. The team of Mark Calcavecchia and Lorena Ochoa eagled the par-5 8th for the other skin on Monday.
-The crowds on Monday were very strong and some who run the event feel that the numbers were clearly up from last year when attendance was also solid.
-This is the final year of the current multi-year contract between the CVS/Caremark Charity Classic and Rhode Island Country Club. However, GoLocalProv.com has learned that there are a series of 1-year mutual options between the tournament and the club and that there will be a 15th annual CVS/Caremark Charity Classic in 2013. New CVS CEO Larry Merlo has expressed his happiness with the event and all that it has done for CVS/Caremark, its sponsors, local charities and the community in general.
