Source: Duke’s Gabrielli To Become Next Providence Lacrosse Coach

A source told the magazine that Gabrielli contacted the Duke staff around 3:15 pm on Friday to inform them that he would be taking the job at Providence.
Sources within the Providence athletic department would neither confirm or deny the report, but did say that a new coach would be announced early next week.
Gabrielli, 33, has spent the past six seasons at Duke as the Blue Devils’ defensive coordinator. He has guided Duke to top-10 finishes in scoring defense in 2007 and 2008, and coached 2008 US Lacrosse National Defenseman of the Year Nick O’Hara.
"I think it's a very good hire for Providence," said Brown University head coach Lars Tiffany. "It's going to make it tougher on us, trying to beat them. Chris brings a toughness and a tenacity to a program that defines exactly what he was as a player. He pushes his men to match his intensity, and that makes the whole team better."
Gabrielli will replace Chris Burdick, who had been the Friars’ head coach for 14 seasons. Providence finished last season 2-12, and has won just five games in the past three years. The Friars did finish last season on a high note, shocking Villanova, 15-11 in the season finale.
The Long Island native has helped lead Duke to NCAA Final Four appearances in each of his six seasons in Durham. The Blue Devils have compiled a 95-24 record in that span, including winning the national championship in 2010.
Gabrielli has also coached All-Americans Casey Carroll, Anthony McDevitt, Parker McKee, Mike Manley, and CJ Costabile.
Prior to arriving at Duke, Gabrielli spent three seasons as an assistant at UMass, where he played collegiately. He then spent a season on the staff at Butler University before joining the staff at Duke in 2007.
