URI Falls Just Short in Upset Bid Over VCU, Lose 65-60

The URI men's basketball team (11-4, 3-1 A-10) fell to the (14-3,4-0 A-10) #17 VCU Rams 65-60 on Tuesday night at the Ryan Center. The loss snaps the URI Rams six game winning streak and gives them thier first loss in conference play.

URI led for the majority of the game until VCU grabbed a 59-58 lead, with 2:30 to go, after back to back three-pointers. The one point lead was VCU's first lead in nearly thirty minutes. URI trailed 61-58 with just under 40 seconds to go with the ball in E.C. Matthews hands after a time out.

Rhode Island was led by E.C. Matthews who netted 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Matthews was followed up by Hassan Martin who notched a triple-double with ten points and ten rebounds.
VCU was led by Treveon Graham who led all scorers with 26 points. Graham also pulled down eight rebounds for the VCU Rams.
Next up, URI hits the road with a visit to UMass on Saturday, January 17. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. The game will be shown on NBC Sports Network.
