Lobbyists like RI-CAN (created by those who founded Achievement First), RIMA, DFER, and Bill Fischer are in favor. Unfortunately, these folks have lots of money to sell their story which is, unfortunately, a half truth.
And "Ed Reform," Achievement First schools have an inconsistent academic record. None of their elementary or middle schools made AYP in 2011, and there are many many problems in their schools in NY (the first state into which AF expanded). AF has not found "what works." Sadly, we are all so desperate to believe that someone or something has that we are vulnerable to the massive lobbyist push and spin that came from the small group who are paid to support this school.
The most horrendous of Achievement First's record centers on English Language Learners (ELLs). Seems most unjust that RI-CAN, AF, RI Mayoral Academies, Democrats for Education Reform (DFER), and Bill Fischer specifically targeted this population's leaders for support, while telling them very little of their record.
In a nutshell, AF schools under-enroll and underserve ELLs by significant amounts compared to the districts from which they draw. They have very little experience with this population and, for those ELLs they have served, they've served them very POORLY and were cited as possibly braking federal law because they were treating ELLs like special ed kids.
Remember, Wall Street gamed the system to the detriment of our entire country. This small group of hedge fund managers that run the boards of 50CAN (parent org of RI-CAN) and Achievement First schools are gaming the system now with public education. What's the gain? It's in investing in facilities for these "new" schools - both renovation and rebuild - that make use of the New Markets Tax Credits, allowing the doubling of investors' monies in 7 years.
Some believe in the corporate white knight when it comes to the current ed reform agenda coming down (top-down) from Washington. I don't. Public education (through the proliferation of charter schools like Achievement First) has become a new market for Wall Street. I'm not a cynic or a conspiracy theorist -- I simply am following the money.

Time to draw back the curtain on this fraud. It's obvious that Gallo and Board are in cahoots. Gallo sends them the blank bill, and the Board sends her the blank check. People we are not talking about $200 from the candy sale, this is millions of TAXPAYERS dollars. Tired of the smoke and mirrors? GET RID OF GALLO AND CANO MORALES. Isn't there a term limit of board seats?? Shouldn't the state get rid of an administrator that flushed $54 million down the toilet?? Gallo has blamed everybody in the district except herself! Ask the people there and you will find schools with leaking roofs, broken bathrooms, mice in the cafeteria, windows that shake when the wind blows, no heat in the library, classes without textbooks and schools without technology. Gallo is a fraud, a liar, and guilty of malfeasance of public funds. Get rid of her and the rubber stamp board and bring in leadership that will get the job done. We have to face the fact that we're pretty much a one horse town when it comes to local talk radio. WHJJ, aside from Helen, falls off the table after 10 a.m. After that, for news and hot topics, its WPRO or nothing. Tiny, hampster-driven radio stations don't make it past town boundries. From: EXCLUSIVE: Financially Mismanaged Central Falls Schools Face $5.6M Deficit

When have we seen this before? Can you say tobacco money. Can you say plug the deficit. Toss it into the black hole. Seems to me our budget problem is now solved, for the short term anyway. Or perhaps will this money have restrictions? Wasn't the tobacco money supposed to be for education on smoking? How long before the unions cry that they want it used for state pension COLAS?From: Exclusive: Dumping DePetro In Morning Hurting WPRO-AM

Those voiceovers are annoying. Little Guy got boring very quickly. And the minute depetro starts his religious ranting on the banner or planned parenthood, I switch stations. But I do like his newsiness, which seems to be missing in the early show now. From: Exclusive: Dumping DePetro In Morning Hurting WPRO-AM

I also listen to Helen Glover and enjoy her work. In addition I listen to WPRO daily as well. I have enjoyed listening to John Depetro as well but have noticed as of late that his show has become very different from what it once was. I am turned off by the constant voice recordings played while he talks over them. These voice recordings consist of things like the words (little guy) someones deceased animal played over and over and other things. It sound more like a circus than a talk show. I don't know what he is attempting to accomplish but once it starts, I am gone. I am in agreement that folks should get their news and discussion from more than once source. Union supported democrats continue to give away money we don't have. When will the average taxpayer become a SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP? Next November, vote for republican candidates who will work for YOU. Seven decades of democrat control has put the state on the brink of insolvency. I agree fully with guy smiley. I have been listening to Helen Glover on WHJJ for years and she does an excellent job. Rhode Islanders have got to learn to change the station on their radios away from WPRO 630 AM and change their TV's away from WJAR TV 10 and see the great alternatives we have on stations like WHJJ 920 AM and WPRV 790, and on TV channels 6, 12 and 64. No other market in the US has such concentration in the ratings on two stations like WPRO 630 and WJAR 10. Change in your radio and TV selections, just like in politics, is good! From: Exclusive: Dumping DePetro In Morning Hurting WPRO-AM

Obviously, if it was decided that the morning show format was to be changed to a new show, the slot didn't "belong" to DePetro. Derderian's one-sided article infers that Gobeil usurped DePetro out of his time slot. Were DePetro doing the job that the station expected, the morning show wouldn't have been changed. As far as I am concerned, Gobeil is the rock solid personality on the morning news show; he's intelligent, personable, sharp, and elicits great responses from the guests he schedules. Granahan regularly comes across as disinterested, confused, uninformed about the topics at hand, and resistant to verbal banter. It is obvious that Derderian’s candor in this article is duplicitous and a better accounting of perspectives is necessary in order for clarity to be communicated. As for me, I can safely say that if Gobeil is removed from the morning show, I'll go back to listening to NPR.From: EXCLUSIVE: Financially Mismanaged Central Falls Schools Face $5.6M Deficit

-Teachers and administrators care more than any so called leader in the the School Department, yet they get all the blame
-This district has been destroyed by fake leaders in the RI Dept of Ed

Depetro's style doesn't fit the morning do-gooder slot. Too many interuptions and family oriented bits in the morning drive slot. He has an opinion, like it or not that draws listeners. During the moring drive, you can't be tough with too much fluff. This article doesn't mention what Depetro's ratings are for the 9 to noon slot. The most popular syndicated talk show hosts have opinions, they didn't get popular by being middle of the road fence sitters or by being liberals.Page 797 of 1362 pages « First < 795 796 797 798 799 > Last »
