Baron is a far superior coach to Keno Davis in my opinion. However, many Rhody fans are unhappy and there have been a lot of empty seats at the Ryan Center this season. Will that prompt Bjorn to act? Who knows?

Amusingly, Brown, renowned for its progressive/liberal mindset, becomes fiscally conservative when asked to dip into its own pocket book to "pay its fair share."

You speak of moral duty, Aaron. I would imagine the Brown elders don't want to see contributions go into the black hole of Providence cronyism, corruption and bloated union contracts. Bail the city out, and the poor behavior continues... pretty much guaranteed.

If I were calling the shots at Brown, I'd insist that Providence clean up its act and prove fiscal responsibility before I forked over even a penny.

I would really love to be able to attend the weddings of my very deserving gay friends and their partners. Why is love in question?? People are actually leaving our state so that they can continue their life and be legally married. That is insane to me. WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR??? Nobody should be judged for whom they love. We aren't talking man and beast. Love is love. Do what's right!

Scott...suggest you check you facts before you post.

Under RI law (at least the last time I was unemployed), you can work at a low-paying (typically part-time) job after being let go from your regular job and still collect unemployment. You must report your earnings to the state and they offset what you get in unemployment. If you start earning more than you get in unemployment, you are no longer unemployed. Basically, you are either working, so not unemployed, or you are not working, so unemployed. It is totally illogical to be both.

More to the point, the vast majority of career military personnel retire, then get another full-time job. Do you begrudge the guys who served until full retirement?

if you worked in rhode island, it is not against the law to receive a pension and leave rhode island. of course, rhode island is also the state where you can be "retired" and still work, and be "disabled" and still work. just don't be unemployed and work, because that IS against the law.

Another consideration is that that's a lot of property for nonprofits to own in quite a small city, 150,000 people and not that much area. In other states, the areas of North Providence and East Providence would certainly have been part of the capital. Providence is 20 square miles. Atlanta is 132 square miles. Even North Kingstown is 47 square miles!

i am no fan of brown but there are secretaries that work for the city that make more in pay, health , personal days, sick days, holidays and pension benefits than those at brown. and i would let you judge who has the most qualifications.

if you ran brown would you sacrifice the pay raise of your secretary so that you could cut a blank check to the city of providence and they can do whatever they want to it???

so instead of the city getting their fiscal act together...which has not happenned yet, just go for the deep pocket?

I think it's tough. I'm not against Brown helping the city remain solvent, but I just don't think we should take it for granted.

These institutions are tax-exempt for a reason and I think it establishes a dangerous precedent when a city has been irresponsible (blame whoever you would like) and then turns to institutions to make up the million dollar gap resulting from its irresponsibility.

The entire country is strapped for cash. The federal government has a $15,000,000,000,000 deficit. Should they then turn to blameless institutions to help cover that hole?

To cover the other side of the coin...it is a little uncanny that Brown owns $3,000,000,000 worth of land which would otherwise yield approximately $100,000,000+ worth of revenue for the city. I suppose we it would not be logical or moral to just ask them to sell it back to us so we can rent it out to someone who will pay rent?

Tough all the way around I suppose.

Hi Jimmy. I definitely haven't agreed with everything the administration has done. But my perspective is that a democracy (and by that I mean not just a democratic political system but a democratic society) only works when everyone contributes. The idea is that there needs to be a public system, to varying degrees controlled democratically by the public, that uses resources for the public good instead of private interests. Obviously that's not who it often works, and when we get really wealthy interests (like, I would argue, those behind the mayoral academies education initiatives you were referring to), the system doesn't function like it's supposed to. But we can't give up on the idea of public institutions. Because obviously the city of Providence provides innumerable vital services for all of us residents.

Mr. Williams (heh), just so you know I didn't choose the title of this article, my original title was "Brown needs to pay its fair share." And my argument for that wasn't legal--obviously if we're talking legally, you're right, Brown doesn't owe anything, as it received a tax-exempt charter from King George III 250 years ago. Just like Mitt Romney doesn't legally owe anything more to the U.S., he pays the super-low tax rate that is the law.

My argument is moral. I think that when so many people are sacrificing so much, it does not make moral sense for an institution as wealthy as Brown to not join in paying its fair share. I also think that your description of the causes of Providence's fiscal situation misess a lot. Undoubtedly, Buddy Cianci did a lot of harm (though I don't think that means all of the city's current residents should be punished for that...what about all the children who weren't even alive during Cianci's reign?). But you also don't mention that the state has cut some 50-60 million in state aid to the city over the last few years. There's a reason so many major urban centers are facing huge fiscal problems--the entire federal system is stacked against them, and I think places like Brown have a responsibility to chip in.

Is it a requirement that when you retire, you must live in the community where you earned your pension?

Countless numbers of retirees all over the country change residence once they retire. They downsize and go where they've always wanted to live. My wife and I earned our pensions in Maryland and when we retired, we returned to Rhode Island where we were born, knowing exactly what we were getting into.

I don't understand GoLocal's obsession with the common phenomenon of retirees deciding to change venue. Some RI retirees move to the Sun Belt. Some retirees choose to move to Rhode Island.

I'm surprised to hear you make this point Aaron. From your previous articles, it doesn't sound like you are a fan of what Providence is doing (particularly around education). Why would you advocate for the University you attend to shell out millions into a system you don't tend to agree with much?

I don't mean to over-generalize or speak on your behalf, just looking for some clarity here.

I love how kicking the can down the road is "hot". This tax-exempts "pay their fair share" notion is nothing but a smokescreen. The only way this city can restructure and fix the underlying financial problems is to let a receiver come in and pull out the hatchet and go to work on every single contract the city has. These band-aids aren't helping anybody but the unions and their retirees who are mostly all living out of state. Lets do something to help the taxpayers and businesses for a change.

The 6% compounded COLA’s were passed by the union stacked retirement board, and by consent decree signed by Cianci settling the lawsuit before the Supreme Court decison was returned. Those idiots passed the 6% COLA, and all the people getting rich, top 30 payees are Chief's, Major's Captain etc. all appointments of Cianci. The State/City passed a law saying that public safety people had to retire at 60. After they lost the case, they all went out on disability, like Walter Clark, McClaughlin. Mayor Paolino passed in 1989, and the City Council approved, the first 5% COLA not the retirement board. Cianci, Cicilline, with City Council approval, continued these 5% COLA’s in contracts for many years before reducing them. As a matter of fact, Taveras with his FOP thank you for sacrificing message, continued the 3% compounded COLA in their latest contract. He gave people incentives to retire early, so they are now added to the pension drain on the system.
Also, we continuously hear about Fire Chief McLaughlin, and this Teixeira officer, but why don’t we hear anything about Gerry Aubin, the Lottery director? He got a Major’s pension from Providence Police with 5% COLA compounded originally, he agreed to reduce to 3% compounded as a settlement to the COLA lawsuit by retirees. Then with no experience, he was hired by the lottery where he is making HUGE salary and benefits on top of his Providence deal? Oh, that’s right he’s on the A-Team so we can’t expose him.
