Brendan Doherty was very specific about his public service career on the Cianci show following Gemma.Gemma sounded unprepared, particularly with regard to supporting Whitehouse.Interesting that Doherty froze his pension for 4 years when he could have legally double-dipped.How often does that happen in RI?Almost never.

Here we go again with more of that elitist liberal 99% garbage yet again. Lets not put our heads in the sand on this one and try to pretend that we are where we are because of rich people and because of a lack of museums and art. We are where we are because a bunch of corrupt liberal politicians have been running the state for the past 70+ years and have institutesd law upon law, tax upon tax, regulation upon regulation, union gineaway upon union giveaway. The intelligent wealthy people said "screw this" and packed up and took their money and left. The retired folks who can live with a far lower tax burden and lower cost of living said "screw this" and left. The business owners who could barely turn a profit due to the excessive taxes and regulations said "screw this" and moved out of state. The students graduating from our colleges who found themselves unable to find a job in the state rated the "worst to do business in" said "screw this" and they left too.
Now look what we're left with. A capital city that's practically bankrupt. 5-6 other major cities already on the verge of bankruptcy. A legislature full of idiots who waste time on soda taxes and bills about dogs sitting on car drivers laps. Bills about giving drivers licenses to illegal aliens and taking away the right of apartment landlords to properly check a tenant's history before renting to them. Bills to take away the rights of the cities to reduce union contracts by forcing binding arbitration. Bills to repeal voter ID. The GA has no sense of urgency nor regard for the financial trauma that's running rampid throughout the state, no concern for the people who are actually stuck footing the bills for all of these tax increases and wasteful government spending, not a care in the world about the fact that their liberal wet dreams about what RI should be is what's caused us to be broken, rapidly deterioriating, and have do viable path out of this disaster they've created.
Liberals, liberalism and one-party Democrat politics caused this problem. Socialism caused this problem. Ignorant voters electing corrupt politician after corrupt politician caused this problem. Lack of fiscal restraint and responsibility caused this problem. The only thing the 1% did is bail out of this state when they finally got sick of the state screwing them over. Do you really blame them?

Where's the legislation to cut spending, cut regulations, cut taxes, repeal unnecessary laws and mandates, the stuff that will actually help the state? These people in the GA all need to go...we're in financial disaster mode and they're wasting time on abortion and more of Graze Diaz's garbage legislation. This whole race shows exactly why we're so screwed in Rhode Island. Gemma is stating that his biggest reason for running is to keep a Dem in the seat, not to put the best possible candidate to represent RI into office. If this is the same mentality that the voters have, we may as well just throw in the towel now and declare the whole state a bankrupt lost cause. The voters need to wake up and realize that this party garbage isn't doing anything to help this state. The inbalance of power in RI cause by excessive tax-and-spend liberals and lack of fiscal conservatism in elected offices has actually caused most of our problems. We need to ignore the (D) and (R) letters next to the names of all of these people running for office and take a good hard long look at who these people are. What do they stand for? what do they want to do to fix Rhode Island? What are their motives for running for office?
Anyone running for congress who says they will get up there in the 435-member House as a freshman and have the magic ability to create thousands of jobs for RI is simply dillusional. Government doesn't create jobs #1, and #2, our biggest problems are at the state level, with the excessive unaffordable social services, excessive unions/union power within the public sector, and government taxes/mandates/unnecessary laws & policies that make it impossible to attract and retain businesses in RI.
People need to vote for the person, not for the party. Voting based on political party in RI for 70+ years is without a doubt what's gotten us into this mess.

David, after rereading your post, I realize I misinterpreted what you were saying. I thought you were one of those Cicillini supporters. My bad. I don't really have a horse in this race. I'm voting for Hinkley. My biggest problem with Gemma is what you stated. After the primary last election, he threw all his support behind the dishonest scumbag, just because he's a democrat. His honesty, or lack of, didn't seem to make any difference

David, you asked:"so how is he [Gemma] different than Cicilline?"
That's easy to answer. He hasn't been PROVEN to be a dishonest liar...yet. He at least deserves the chance. No way, NO WAY does a scumbag like Cicillini belong in Congress.

It is Todd, it is... The difference is Brendan is not holding himself out as a lock-step Republican, unlike his potential opponent, who has insisted, despite his track record and statements on thing like womens' choice, that he is a TRUE Democrat and "will vote in concert with the Democrats" as a true Democrat. Cicilline-like hypocrisy. A world of difference my good friend, a world of difference. From: Dan Lawlor: Where is Rhode Island’s One Percent?

Chris, this is socialist code: Dan Lawlor-----"Rhode Island doesn't need more rich people to be successful. We need small scale business owners, middle class entrepreneurs, and working people across the state to work together and get the support needed to open businesses, open museums, open community libraries, end chronic homelessness, and create engaging, exciting places to live."Note: "work together" ... "get the support needed" (from the government, of course)...not to mention the obsession with "art"
This article is gross.

the "urban sprawl" stuff is a bunch of leftist crap, typically found within elite college classrooms. People don't just leave cities for better environments for their kids. They leave because of the failure of liberal policies (high crime, high cost of living, high taxes, etc)But in RI, it's even worse than that. People who moved to the suburbs have now left the state! WHY, Lawlor? Because Democrats were taking their money and funneling it back into the cities that they had tried to run away from!

If it bothers you that Gemma didn't vote in the 2008 Democratic primary or that he can contributed to Republican candidates, you could always vote for Brendan Doherty. Let's look at this wonderful businessman. During his tenure at Gem Plumbing, his firm was cited for 32 labor violations, many for using unlicensed plumbers. However, this "pro-business democrat" was financing Governor Carcier's campaign at the time and his fine imposed by the RI Department of Labor was reduced from $26,000 to $10,000 thanks to his support for the then-Governor.The Tiny Gemma stepped into politics supporting the privitization of Social Security...but quickly withdrew that support when he realized he would lose votes in the First District.
Gemma joined the Democratic Party roughly 60 days before announcing his candidacy - he was supporting Carcieri and a Republican immediately prior.
AND, during the 2008 Democratic presidential primary - HE DIDN'T VOTE. A Democrat, he says?
Lastly, this self-annointed businessman is over $200,000 in the campaign hole, with mortgages/bank loans attached to his prior campaign... A borrowing and spend Democrat? How original. We would expect the same if he ever got elected - which rest assured won't happen.
Saying or doing whatever it will take to win - so how is he different than Cicilline?

What recovery? The state never got out of the last recession and as we see more and more store closing, it just another indicator there is little left to this economy. The knock out blow will be the gasoline. I am seeing the early signs of the $4.00 gas with fewer cars on the road. Crime rate is going up around the state - all kinds of crimes to make a buck. People are hurting and the government is doing nothing! Perhaps if people hurt bad enough, they will change their votes on these bums, but that is a long shot. From: PowerPlayer: Republican Senate Candidate Barry Hinckley
