Are you serious? Obviously you and BROWNIE BOY, STEVEN BUM BROWN have your facts wrong. Whoever has given you or driven you to this story is a parent who had their child arrested for fighting which is a crime(RI GENERAL LAW 11-45-1) and is upset that their kid broke the law.
BUM BROWN also has no clue. Unlike Warwick officers do not get involed with Phones, sagging pants, hats or browsing the hallways, there is much more going on in Providence schools. I am sure you and BROWNIE boy have no clue casue your kids are in private schools or in quiet little Barrington or Little Compton. Fights are not a little scuffle on the corner but usually 2 kids in a circle of about 3oo kids or so and they lock arms so it does not get broken up. Happens often.
Let me correct you agian. Hope has 2 Officers not 4. For many yrs there was only one for about 1500 kids.
Brown has armed Officers for their Ivy League school and so does Harvard, UMM wonder why? Do you and BROWNIE BOY watch the news and see how school violence has risen and when their are shootings the word juvenile means they are under 18 and most likely in High School?

in News

Donna,

Taking away the City Council's cell phones is a fine idea, but it might save a few thousand dollars a year...not the MILLIONs per year Providence needs to save to avoid bankruptcy. Why do public employees feel they are so victimized by this?? The same thing happens ALL THE TIME in the private sector...only worse! First of all, private sector employees don't get any "guaranteed" benefits or job protection because RI is an 'employement at will' state...so private employers can and DO fire staff and cut benefits how ever they need to in order to stay financial stable. Somehow that is a totally alien concept to state workers. Try working in the private sector for a few years, and you'll see what job insecurity is all about. No organization -- private or public -- can stay out of bankrupcy if the Managers keep giving our more raises, more benefits and more perks that the organization can possibly afford. Providence is lucky to have a Mayor who can do MATH.

The geniuses in the Marble Palace think that Rhode Islanders don't look past their front yard. When times get tough, we go where we must to get the best deal. The solution is NOT raising taxes. The solution is smaller government, reduced spending, and right to work laws. The governing party hasn't figured it out in seven decades. It's time to bring accountability to our government.

Well said Bill. I couldn't agree more. Lynette, I understand what you are saying, but that is missing the point. We levied a tax on this business now and I feel that is unfair to them as it will drive up their prices. We should be lowering taxes to help businesses thrive and tax revenue comes via income/corporate taxes. I feel the same way with the bridge tolls for the residence in South County. Just a bad idea. I want to give you a quick example... I just paid 12 cents less per gallon in MA for gas(because I was low). The price is higher because of the taxes levied. We should be lowering those to pull in business away from MA and the same is applicable to for the cigarette tax. Consumers are not stupid and will pay the lower costs whenever they can. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why the legislature thinks otherwise.

You obviously think this board's job is to "catch whales". Finding or starting 30-40 small or medium size businesses in the area will be as good for the economy, if not better.

I've known Ms. Vareika for several decades. I don't know anyone more tenacious. I think we will look back on these appointments as one of the wisest things the governor has done.

As far as Ed Jucation's comment goes, I think it's a good example of the kind of assumptions I was talking about. I don't know how much time you've spent in Hope, but it's not "gang infested." And the culture there, while it definitely has lots of room for improvement, also has a lot of great points. But we just assume that someone's going to get stabbed, anyways.

Hi all. Thanks for your correction--I apologize for incorrectly assuming that there aren’t police in the public schools in schools like East Greenwich High School. I was wrong (and will certainly be informing the students I spoke with about this correction). However, I think it's hard to argue that the police have very different presences in these different communities. At East Greenwich High, there is, a quick Google search found, 1 school resource officer two out of five days of the week (though the school is trying to get someone assigned all five days of the week) for a school of around 800. That's a pretty significant difference from four police for a school of around 1,000. Can we agree on that?

I also want to apologize for not being more clear in my article--I think this is a problem particularly pronounced when it comes to low-income students of color, but it's a problem in how we treat all students (I remember--I was not a low-income student of color, but I often felt vaguely criminalized during my high school days just for being a kid).

Donna - unions were created in the late 1800s to help put an end to child labor, poor/unsafe working conditions, and wage advocacy (since there wasn't minimum wage until the late 1930's).

I assure you that they were not created to extort money from members by force, and they were not created to allow public sector unions to use their money and power to elect politicians to office who would agree to giveaways that anyone with half a brain can tell are unsustainable in the long-term and would bankrupt any eneity.

We now have federal laws and agencies that control and manage child labor, working conditions, and the minimum wage. I know my history, and I know the corrupt political history of Rhode Island that's brought many of out cities and towns to the edge of bankruptcy.

It's the same political corruption (elected officials signing obviously unsustainable labor contracts is most definitely political corruption), and lack of fiscal restraint and responsibility coupled with the one-party politics in RI that's caused our mess. It's driven the taxes through the roof, driven out most of the wealth in the state, forced many businesses to leave the state or close altogether, and made RI the state that's the worst to do business in and the state with the 2nd highest unemployment rate.

Retirement systems should be fully funded by the employee and employer during their employment duration so that no additional funds are required to sustain that employee's retirement and benefits once that employee retires (this goes for public and private sector). If the system is too expensive, change the type of system, or decrease the benefit, it's pretty easy. The private sector figured this out decades ago. It's time we do the same thing with out public sector employees too. The taxpayers (many of whom are new younger taxpayers who weren't even alive when some of these sweetheart deals were signed) don't deserve to bear the consequences of the corrupt system that put us where we are today.

Of all of the weird, whacked out liberal columns that this man has written for this outlet, this is by far the craziest. I don't know what Mr. Regunberg is smoking, but most, if not all, public schools have Resource Officers. My younger daughter transferred from Lincoln High to Mount Hope, and there were Resource Officers in both places. There continues to be a Resource Officer at Mount Hope. There is also a presence at the Jr. High, and there was a situation a few years ago, where 7th and 8th graders in some sort of "Scottish Mafia" were threatening others. Try as you might, Mr. Regunberg, this is NOT a racial issue. Violence, or the threat of it, occurs in all public schools.

It WAS Congressmistake Chi Chi's fault that the situation in Providence got so bad, and he deserves NONE of the credit for avoiding Bankruptcy. People will have short memories indeed if they forget the lies and coverups; the machinations that ChiChi undertook to keep the truth from the voters. Is this the best that we can do as our Representative in Washington? Not only no, but HELL no.

As far as Cicilline goes, maybe the "B" word won't be used, but how about the "L" word, lie, or the "C" word, cover-up when referring to his handling of the city's finances in the waning months of his tenure as mayor? Cicilline apparently has Gemma in his corner anyway, or at least it appears that way.

Moses Brown doesn't have cops in their school because they do not have to tolerate the troublemakers that Prov public schools have to accept. Your living in fantasy land! Teachers get assaulted and other students get assaulted. These are crimes, and they should be handled by law enforcement, not educators. And when a student brings a gun, or a knife, or drugs to school, my kids may have a chance if a cop is there to make an arrest sooner, rather than later when it is too late.

Wrong again.

In fact, "pathetic" in this case modifies "little failure." Usage of the term "little failure" -- as in Hitler, the "little dictator" -- to describe David Cicilline is quite common.

With each post, you demonstrate the distinction between learning a language and picking it up. In this regard, you bring to mind Brendan Doherty.

Beyond this point, please be advised: I would engage you in a battle of wits, but I make it a practice not to attack an unarmed opponent.

Aaron, you know why their are cops in schools? Because there aren't any parents at home. Cops today do what parents used to do - and that is be a parent rather than a child's friend.

Government policies have destroyed the nuclear family. It is too easy to get a divorce. The shame once attached to illegitimacy is gone. There is rampant recreational drug use. Sex without care or conscience. The result: social pathology beyond what any government program can repair.
