I'm not sure Travis is confusing the word "progressive" here. He has pointed out that those who are calling for a progressive income tax have actually stated its purpose, which is to redistribute wealth. And that is socialistic.

Those that rely on payday loans are the same folks that have huge credit card debt, rent, and utilize rent-a-center. They are 200% more likely to rely on the state for some type of assistance, there fore 200% more likely to vote democrat.

Travis, you are confusing "progressive" as in taxes with "progressive as in "liberal." Experts believe the income tax is progressive, as opposed to sales taxes, for example, which are regressive. That is, sales taxes -- ans property taxes -- are mostly paid by those who can least afford them. Everyone must pay their fair share, which is not socialistic. That's all I ask. The burden of property taxes is unbearable in RI, and it affects those who rent, too.

Today is day 24 that the city council leadership is in violation of the city charter, due to the fact the redistricting process has not been completed by March 1st. I guess they figure because there is no penalty imposed that its alright to violate the charter.

I urge everyone to oppose this ordinance, please call the following council members and tell them to vote no on the redistricting ordinance on tuesday,Councilman Solomon,Hassett,Igliozzi,Narducci,Zurier,Yurdin,Jennings and Salvatore. Call them at 521-7477

You can also come and voice your opposition on monday at 6pm at Providence city hall for the public hearing. Its on the 3rd floor in the city council chambers.

Let's try doing math, the right way.
Let's take 100% of the people in the state, between the ages of 18 and 65. This can be obtained from our latest census.

Then we take the amount of people who are actually paying state income tax on a weekly basis, to the state of RI.

Divide one number into the other, and this will give you the ACCURATE % of people who are unemployed.
Any other method of figuring this out is nothing but BS.

I would oppose this bill simply on the provision about teacher's retirement. Didn't we just witness what happens when you let elected officials and union hacks manage pension systems? We shouldn't be enrolling anymore employees in the state/municipal pension systems PERIOD. Most companies have bailed on them because they're too costly and difficult to manage, and the public sector should be following suit with the private sector.

This entire bill seems like one big power play by union-owned legislators to marginalize the positive effects these schools are having on children. Lets face is folks, the unionized public schools continue to fail children, and we need new solutions, not more money thrown at a failing public education system that's too costly for the poor results we're getting out of it. Education policy needs to be re-focused on the needs of students, not the needs of teachers. It should focus on student curriculum, student performance and student activity needs, not teacher salary & benefit packages/retirements/pensions/binding arbitration garbage.

The taxpayers pay the taxes, and we need to aggressively and forcefully step up and take control of the checkbook away from the special interests (unions) and the politicians who give away the store to support them. We can't afford it anymore, and the education of our children can't afford to suffer anymore.

The argument is just lost on me, my children receive free lunch and one has an IEP(an argument brought up by another commenter) … so as far as I am concerned all I need to know is BVP is doing a wonderful job. More schools should take a page from their book, and the state should be promoting that. We do need to reform the education system for all RI children… and we should all work together to get it done.

Essentially what it means is desegregating all schools by poverty. PPSD schools and charters with similar free lunch rates have very similar test scores; Blackstone Valley Prep (test scores for 5-6): 68% reading, 72% math, Vartan Gregorian Elementary (PPSD): 61% reading, 66% math. Both are about 45% free lunch. That's pretty much all you need to know.

Tom, like I said, I think all kids should have the same opportunities, but instead of saying, “They have a better opportunity so let’s take it away to level the playing field.” we should be working together to say, “What a great opportunity, how can we give all children the same opportunity?” Maybe it means raising taxes, maybe it means reforming some of the policies around education and our standards as a state etc.

Isn't this a bit of a contradiction...

The key difference is whether a workplace is unionized or not, said Michael Sabitoni, president of the Rhode Island Building and Construction Trades Council, which encompasses many of occupations with the highest fatality rates. Labor unions improve safety because they invest in training, have work rules, and emphasize job-site orientation, Sabitoni said.

If labor unions improve safety rates, why do they continue to have some of the highest fatality rates?

BVP supporters might ask their friends at RIMA why their Achievement First schools will not benefit from the same diversity that the parents commenting here praise. AFMA will not have equal representation from each participating community, like BVP, will not have a board made up of political representatives of each participating community, like BVP, and targets an 80% low income and primarily minority population, unlike BVP's goal of diversity.

Why doesn't Providence get the same benefits?

Mortensen was re-assigned to the minor league camp this morning.

I have a question, when players get arrested for DUI, can the team release that player and not have to pay him another nickle since he breached the contract.

And here in the case of Bobby Jenks, who was arrested at 3:45 AM after he crashed his car in Fort Myers.

And here is why I can never become a manager. I would have gone completely POSTAL on this Jenks dude. I have ZERO tolerance for people of his sort and I don't care who likes it and who don't.

Maybe Valentine should be more upset at BJ than Girardi, who seems to have a lame excuse for every situation.

I don’t want to offend anyone here, but those of you making negative comments… how much do you know about this school? Where is your first hand experience? I mean it’s great to have an opinion but I am of the school of thought that you should gather a certain amount of data in order to form that opinion. I mean it’s great to hear one side and think their point is valid but then perhaps hear the other side and make a well informed opinion on the topic. As far as the school letting in children with criminal backgrounds etc, what school does do that? If a child was convicted of a sexual crime, as suggested by one responder, wouldn’t they end up in a special school as it is? As far as special needs, I already shared my experience as a BVP parent with a child with special needs…
I wish that all kids had the opportunity to receive the caliber of education offered at BVP, and personally as a parent that is what ALL of us should be focused on. Our state needs a better education system, more funding for education; changes do need to be made. But not at the expense of a thriving school… personally I want to see more schools like BVP in RI.

Hi Mr. Fazio - Here I am on a SOAPBOX since I have a son with an IEP, I guess I’m allowed to speak. My son attends BVP, a mayoral academy, and BVP has embraced my son and never tried to “coax” him out of the school. From the start, they have worked closely with him, meeting with him several times before the school year even started. And, not only has he been making huge strides academically along with his classmates (Have you seen the NECAP results?), he has found a huge support system among his teachers and his classmates. Last night, my husband and I were so touched after reading a note from all his classmates expressing how much they like and admire him. I am not going to say why my son has an IEP because out of respect for him, and it is none of your business anyway. But know this, that note meant the world to him. We have enrolled him in private and public schools and moved to a different school district trying to find the right fit for him, and let me tell you, my son has never felt more welcomed and has never been more successful than he has at BVP. So mover over Fazio, this soapbox is mine!
