Whoever wrote this article needs a refresher course in writing in journalism, or a plane ticket to a city that the rest of the country gives a crap about, 'cos Jon Stenning's comment will far outlive and outweigh the shoddy stab taken at a Rhode Islander looking for accountability from a celebrity like Schilling. Why would a journalist favor Mr Schilling in this way? We wonder.
This is even more reactionary and insulting than Jon Stenning's original comment, which was barely either of those things. Get it?
Firstly, to call a twentysomething who follows people on twitter and makes humorous comments a 'heckler' is pathetic. It's what most people Jon's age do on twitter. It's humor. It's twitter.
Secondly, to try and rub in the fact that he's an amateur comedian and belittle him is wholly ironic and actually hilarious coming from a Providence RI journalist who can't piece together an article that has a shred of writing talent or unbiased objectivity.
Thirdly, to take jabs at celebrities, friends and 'just about anyone' for a good laugh or a few page views is exactly what this (quoting Jon Stenning here - "piece of sh*t") journalist does on a daily basis, but the difference is, they get paid for it. Biased? of course.
This journalist is missing the point, is looking for cheap sensationalist news, in the wrong place, in the wrong way, with tired old commentary that works on 50 somethings, but won't wash with the kind of people who were affected by Schilling's studio failing.
Young people.
Whoever wrote this will have a long career trying to comprehend the whole concept of social media, while writing about it's users, all the time not understanding what sarcasm and wit is.
His attempt at journalism is clearly devoid of any of the above.
Did Jon Stenning only gain 10 followers since you wrote those childish words kiddo?
Possibly.
But here's the thing. He'll be more famous, retain more integrity, and at least has a chance of a career after this, whereas in your case, it's patently obvious you can't write to save your life, other than take a badly written, cheap stab at someone you neither comprehend nor understand.
God help you. And, as I'm sure you mother's saying, Shame on you.
Good people lost jobs, this deal is a big one, and you're defending Schilling it seems.
Shame on you.

Mannix at SI now has him top 20 and a riser -everything is in the moment but Mannix usually has a measured take.
So I ask if you're still rooting against the kid as you stated when he declared and if you'll continue to base your assessment of the wisdom of his decision on whether or not he makes the first round.
My laymen's take is that Im bummed we didnt get to see him in black and white for the only year he was going to be here anyway. (Cooley - if he played we were top 20/he was top 20?) and annoyed that the clearninghouse ruled the way it did.

What do process improvement experts say about "accountability" as a method for improvement? Note that Deming listed performance reviews as among the 7 deadly diseases infecting western managers. What you call raising the bar, I call reducing educational goals to test prep. Question, how do elite private schools hold teachers accountable? What standardized tests are used their to rank students or determine graduation requirements?

Russ - i only took 2 years of French and Mrs. Hedenberg would probably reprimand me for my error....But if you believe I'm lauding Gist for union bashing and not as I said, raising the bar, your English teacher might want to consider other gainful employment.Ed - I mentioned administrators...they don't get a pass. I also mentioned parents...they shouldn't get a pass. It's the coordinated effort of teachers, administrators, parents, and students. But I believe we've expected too little of our teachers and students and that the problem starts there. If we change expectations I have no doubt that if we did nothing else, we'd raise our performance levels.

Giving students a pass eh? We have been told to fail no more than 10% of our students no matter what their actual grade may be. Students who we DO fail are socially promoted by the ADMINISTRATION, not the teachers. Students who are absent 40-60 days a year are promoted. Teachers have been reprimanded for failing too many students. When they get to college or CCRI they realize that they are woefully unprepared and who do they blame? The teachers. Here is how to fix the problem.1. Enforce state law 16.19.1 concerining mandatory attendance. Fine parents the allowed $50 per day each day the student is absent without an excuse. Hold the parents accountable.
2. Enforce state law 16.19.6 concerning chronic misbehavior in school. Remove the wayward children (the thousands of them) from regular schools. Then students who want to learn can learn disruption free.
3. Garnish public assistance money for parents who allow students to be truant and/or disruptive.
Only when you are in a school day after day do you realize it's not the teachers. MOST teachers want to teach and see children succeed but the reality is that we are mostly babysitters trying to control the crowd. You are correct Mr. Roach that we are failing our students but we do all we can in an impossible situation.

Ed, the last time I was in an urban classroom is a long...say circa 2004/5 when I taught an after school educational program in Providence. A few years before that I did my student teaching at Central High School. What I didn't like there was teachers and mostly administration seemed to be giving students a pass. They didn't expect them to succeed and it was evident. I had conversations with my students about that subject, so I'm definitely not ignorant to what is going on in schools.Your comment implies that teachers are absolved of responsibility and instead lays blame on the environment or the student. I heard this a lot while teaching at Central and especially during my time teaching the after school program.
I think its bullocks. Teachers, parents, administrators, and students have responsibility and I’ll acknowledge that I believe the former three have more responsibility than young kids who are being led by parents, teachers, and administrators. I see Gist as a voice in the darkness that is a culture of “don’t hold teachers and administrators accountable”. You can call me ignorant, ill-informed, but when Gist raises the level of expectation for teachers and students I don’t see the downside unless you don’t have a belief that the students and teachers can rise to the challenge.
In the afterschool program, I taught a number of kids who had been in school for 3+ years but had zero command of the English language. Zero. I wondered about my own schooling and how I’d ever be able to pass a grade but not be able to put a sentence together? It would not have happened. We’re failing to educate many children based upon the statistics, and I’m not saying its 100% the fault of teachers. What I am saying is the same old rhetoric like your isn’t going to increase the educational performance of our children. Gist is trying a different way and I like that it rankles some, with my hope being that it causes us to raise the bar for all kids in the system.

Are you serious Mike? What can teachers do to force the city or state to enforce the law? Also, teachers have NO say in what the administration chooses to do or not do. Teachers do what the administration tells them. As for ineffective teachers, Gist's new $35 million dollar teacher evaluation will weed them out. And you know what? I'll bet 99% of the teachers evaluated will receive an "effective" rating or above. I hope RIDE provides those numbers. When a vast majority of RI teachers are deemed "effective" who will you blame? The ignorance of people on this topic amazes me, especially when most have not been inside a school since they graduated. From: poll: #12 Bristol: RI’s Best Communities 2013

RI's need to look past what the unions say, but what the results are. They say it's for the kids, but from the results, it isn't.In most school budgets, over 92% of the cost teachers salaries and benefits. As these costs increase (mandatory "step increases, medical costs, etc...), the administrations will cut the fluff--band, athletics, and so forth--and keep staff and bloated salaries/benefits untouched. So, who is it about again?
From: Don Roach: Deborah Gist, You Go Girl!

It's obvious Mr. Roach has not been in an urban classroom in a long time. He doesn't understand that the real problem in education lies with the parents, students, administration and a culture dependent on public assistance. Is it the teachers' fault that a huge number of students were absent over 40 days this year? Does he know that attendance is directly related to achievement? Does he know that chronic absenteeism is against state law? (RIGL 16.19.1) Does he know that the state REFUSED to enforce this mandatory attendance law? Does he know that there is a law (RIGL 16.19.6) that allows the state to declare chronically misbehaving students as "wayward" and can remove them from the school? Does he know that NO STUDENT has ever been declared wayward and removed so others could learn? What does he think about the Providence teacher who was repeatedly assaulted by students, who was body slammed to the ground while 6 months pregnant?Does he know the school department never called the police and the teacher was assaulted again in a different school? I suggest you research and observe actual classrooms Mr. Roach before you bash teachers. Absolutely no clue.
