I don't disagree with the author's thesis, but it's funny how when you read this carefully it sounds suspiciously like an article that simply says "Vote for Left-Wingers! We're dandy!"From: Taveras Unveils Budget: City Council Reacts

Maybe if these colleges would cut back on their extortionate tuitions this wouldn't be such an issue. Any other industry that got away with what "higher education" does would be accused of predatory lending. We need to stop encouraging people to go so deeply into debt for what are often worthless degrees. From: Taveras Unveils Budget: City Council Reacts

Detroit is laying off as many as 3.500 city employees (1,000 announced earlier and 2,500 just announced)- 35% of the city workforce plus an across the board 10% pay decrease for the rest.On top of that department spending will be slashed as much as 55%.
Meanwhile Providence supposedly on the brink of bankruptcy raises their budget?

Ah, Dan: Why no mention in your article that the Mayor's proposed budget is a $24.5 million INCREASE from the current year? This is no budget. It's full of assumptions about
income that does not yet exist!
Either this is just more smoke and mirrors, or Angel really doesn't have a clue.
Where are the spending cuts? All I see is a multi-million dollar increase. This is no budget - it's pure fantasy.

http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2009/battery-material-0311.htmlMIT engineers have created a kind of beltway that allows for the rapid transit of electrical energy through a well-known battery material, an advance that could usher in smaller, lighter batteries -- for cell phones and other devices -- that could recharge in seconds rather than hours.
The work could also allow for the quick recharging of batteries in electric cars

when included in a mortgage, your GHP will have a positive cash flow from the beginning. For example, say that the extra $3,500 will add $30 per month to each mortgage payment. The energy cost savings will easily exceed that added mortgage amount over the course of each year.
On a retrofit, the GHP's high efficiency typically means much lower utility bills, allowing the investment to be recouped in two to ten years.

HOWEVER, there are other side of the coin issues, such as carbon absorption by our oceans which are very grave, the acidification of ocean water by the carbonic acid risks the entire food chain. Also, invasive species, and runoff are other scary environmental issues. And nuclear power, just look at Japan and Chernobyl. Thousands of square MILES of land permanently polluted with radio-isotopes that insidiously concentrate in the food chain causing cancer and gene damage. Sustainable energy is available NOW. Geothermal power from groundwater is an option TODAY and could be used in every home to reduce heating and cooling carbon emissions by 70%. I saw this at an open house with my very own eyes, looks no different than a normal heating and cooling system. "3D" Solar panels developed by a private company and almost ready make 200% the electricity of the best current panels. MIT has developed batteries that can be charged as fast as filling your gas tank, making another step toward fully electric cars that actually work. NONE of this seems to get enough airplay. WHY is that? We have the solutions right NOW to evolve to a sustainable energy future. At the very least why havent we promoted building codes that require some of the best options in our homes, like Germany has? Get rid of junk science, and embrace real practical choices available right now. Todays cars are 98% cleaner burning than when I was a kid, and people and auto companies poo-pooed emission controls at the time, because they took a while to perfect. Get rid of junk science, and embrace real practical choices available right now. The president is right that coal, oil, and carbon based fuels ARE a thing of the past, or, they could be if we wanted them to.From: Rob Horowitz: New Polling Provides Some Hope for Earth Day

The Earth average temperature has not risen in twelve years. http://icecap.us/images/uploads/HADLEY_CRU.jpgRachel Carlson's book "silent spring" made claims that have reportedly been largely disproved. But not before DDT was banned, killing hundreds of millions of people by malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases.

There are some disadvantages of owning these computers as well. A chess player that is not human can not make the mistakes that a human can make. Therefore, the computer is a much more difficult competitor. Not only that, but they also do not prepare you for the reactions of human play. And, of course, they can be quite an investment as well. You can find various options to choose from, though, from software programs to complete programs.
The Verdict
It's important to weigh the advantages and the disadvantages when it comes to computers like these chess computers

I agree with Rep. Costa. A a minimum, this needs to be voted on by the General Assembly, so all RI residents can know how their elected officials voted on this. I thought we elected our reps to speak for us on matters of how our tax dollars are spent? Another example of ..."only in RI." I don't know. You can call RIC, URI and CCRI and ask them this:How many freshman we accepted for the 2012 school year?
How many of those accepted were from RI high schools?
How many of those accepted were from out-of-state high schools?
How many potential freshman received rejection letters?
How many of those went to RI students?
How many of those went to out-of-state students?
How many available total openings were there for incoming freshman?
Obviously giving many of those RI slots to illegal aliens would mean fewer potential slots for RI high school students who are legal US residents??
How many

I meant to say that a "huge number of spot are NOW filled by out-of-staters." It's a fact. Looks at the records from our state schools. There are too few opening for deserving, tax-paying RI'ers, and now you'd like to give those openings to illegal aliens? Makes no sense to do that, unless you can prove every legal resident has a spot open at these schools.Page 707 of 1398 pages « First < 705 706 707 708 709 > Last »
