"the homeless should be at the stop of the list of our spending priorities? What's that?

Don't be fooled by this candidate's self-serving rhetoric.

He is well known in State House circles as a one-issue promoter: his goal is to deprive all women of the right to control their own bodies.

Joe Almeida back in office, are you kidding me? his bulling and strong arm tactics are sickening. It was nice to know that the PEOPLE voted him out. It is nice to have a new Rep, that cares about his area. And as far as I know Mr. Medina was not convicted of anything. So who are we to judge someone when by what we read in the paper, when we all know that no one is perfect.

For the record, the original headline was, "RI Religion Under Attack." Which is, I suppose, only slightly more transparent in its journalistic opinion than the new one. But it doesn't change the fact that everyone interviewed for this piece is a religious affiliate or advocate (save the very last line from Steve Brown, who simply stated that the ACLU is not involved).

I hadn't realized until now that GoLocalProv is a sacred-leaning organ of opinion.

The fundamental difference between the crosses/stars/crescents on military headstones and the cross atop the Woonsocket Memorial is that the symbol is not associated with the individuals in the latter case. There is a real difference between having a cross after each name on the plaque, denoting the faith of each individual, and having a cross on the memorial as a whole, which can be taken as a symbol of the faith of the community that erected the memorial. Having the cross on the memorial is akin to having a cross over the entrance to a national military cemetery.

First, this is no more an “attack on religion” than there is a “war on Christmas” – both are fictions pushed by groups and individuals who have an interest in stirring up emotions and anger for their own ends. This is an attempt to enforce the Constitutional prohibition against an establishment of religion, as was the Cranston “Prayer Banner”’ case. Is this a valid challenge? I’m not sure, but the erection and display of religious symbols on public property by any government for any reason certainly appears on its face to be an endorsement of religion.

Paul Marshall, Judges are NOT supposed to “side with the people” when deciding cases – they are supposed to decide what the law requires and then apply that law to the proven facts of the case. Legal issues generally – and Constitutional issues in particular – are not popularity contests, nor should they be. This is not a Democrat/Republican issue, either. We’ve had many Republican state officers, including Governors and Attorneys General, as well as sizeable minorities in the GA at times. We also have plenty of DINOs in the state legislature, who take the “D” to get elected but vote as ‘conservatives’ when it comes down to voting.

A valid question has been raised and the City has yet to respond officially. Nothing has been filed in Court and there may be nothing ever filed regarding this issue. It is far too early to start screaming and crying about fictitious assaults on anyone’s religion at this stage.

In the end the question is: does the presence of the cross equate to government "endorsing" Christianity. As Father Kiley pointed out, the memorial was to honor four specific individuals. They all happened to be Christians. When a servicemember dies, the government provides a marker that can be a cross, Star of David or even a crescent. This would seem to be a frivolous case on behalf of a group that wants money.

@Victor:

You're right.

Question: WHICH JUDGE IN RI will side with the people?

How did we get here: We voted democRAT for the last 70 years.

What's next: It won't be pleasant. The government has become a parasite on the people. Bullying us and punishing anyone who speaks out.

Formulas: Change=Stop Voting DemocRAT

Jobs= entrepreneurs+investors
Lower taxes=more investors
Lower taxes=more entrepreneurs
More jobs=more tax revenues
Solution: STOP voting DEMOCRAT

Let's all get distrcted from the issues that we all know Rhode Island faces and engage in frantic, hysterical rhetoric about godlessness, the Christian (?) nature and history of the country. Marches, protests, and movements are great for creating frenzy. The issue is a legal one. If pused it may be played out in the courts--definintely not in the arena of the mass public.

If you can't figure it out, then perhaps you shouldn't be engaged in this conversation. Answer the four questions first, then read the book. "There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge'" -- Isaac Asimov
