Great article!!

Rob, exactly why I try to stay away from books all together. Too stressful. However, as I understand it, if you lend a book on a Kindle it automatically returns to the lender in 14days. In fact, it becomes unreadable after 14 days only to be made readable again by the lender. Pretty cool!!!

The public unions, along with their appointed/elected lackeys in government have succeeded in pushing this state to the edge of bankruptcy. I say, ‘let it happen.” Give them what they want and push this state over the cliff. Once the state hits rock bottom, then the courts can invalidate the contracts as there will no longer be a viable entity to contract with. Restructuring can take place and all of these “sweetheart deals” can be thrown out.

The public sector workers have been corrupted by the unions and have become greedy slugs. These people could care less what the taxpayers are feeling in their pocketbooks. After all, it’s all about them!

The state’s bond rating is about to get downgraded due to the pension issue. This will have implications across the state as municipalities will also be seeking to borrow funds and find themselves paying more in higher interest costs. This cycle of borrowing also has to change. We simply cannot afford to keep this going – un-sustainable!

Anthony's Deli on Admiral Street in Providence is also the original home of the "sangwich." Whatever that is. All I know is they have some delicious stuff too. Wish they made this list as well as J's...

GREAT piece. Taxes in America should be severely low. That opens the floodgates of prosperity. For EVERYONE. Have to cut the size of gov't (spending) first though.

Catherine, the only general election poll numbers (Channel 12) show John Loughlin and Brendan Doherty trouncing Cicilline. In fact, there are fewer undecideds in the Loughlin/Cicilline numbers than the Doherty/Cicilline numbers, meaning that Loughlin may actually be the stronger candidate against Cicilline.

But I'm still perplexed. Doherty's backers want me to support him, but they refuse to tell me what I'd be supporting. I know that some members of Doherty's campaign read this blog, so can someone, ANYONE, answer the following basic questions for me-

1. Does Doherty support or oppose Obamacare?
2. Does Doherty support a Constitutional amendment to protect life?
3. Does Doherty support or oppose card check?
4. Does Doherty support or oppose the Mexico City Policy?
5. Does Doherty support or oppose federal funding for Planned Parenthood?

And please don't respond by insulting my intelligence and telling me that I should support Doherty if you can't answer my questions about what policies Doherty supports.

In my humble opinion I would ask out brave mayor to layoff as many of the management staff as possible andnot to replace them, a freeze on all promotions and hirings. We have been sympathetic to the fire fighter's cause in the past but not any more. This is out and out GREED. We all have to share the sacrifice, why should I have to endure another tax increase to pay for their greed??? Maybe they don't understand that a lower bond rating will hinder the financing of new development in the great city.

Catherine, the only general election poll taken thus far shows John Loughlin and Brendan Doherty faring equally as well against Cicilline in the general election. In fact, there were fewer undecided voters in the Loughlin/Cicilline matchup than the Doherty/Cicilline matchup! So it's obvious anyone paying attention that either Loughlin or Doherty would beat Cicilline and Loughlin nearly did so when Cicilline was still the very popular mayor of Providence. So objective data makes it obvious that there are multiple answers to the question of "which Republican can defeat Cicilline"--and if you believe the polls, Loughlin appears to be the stronger candidate based on the lower number of undecideds.

But I still have yet to get answer to my question on whether or not Doherty supports

1. Obamacare;
2. A Constitutional amendment to protect life;
3. The Mexico City Policy;
4. Federal funding for Planned Parenthood;

It would also be nice to know his position on union issues such as card check.

Can you provide me with this information???? There are Doherty campaign people reading this blog, but it seems they just want me to blindly support their candidate without telling me where Doherty stands on ANYTHING!

JOHN LOUGHLIN IS THE REPUBLICAN TO WIN THIS RACE. There was no need for Doherty to enter this race. Most candidates don't win their first time out. Loughlin came within 5% of beating Cicilline before the truth about Providence came out. Doherty, who in the past was content to vote as a democrat is not concerned about Republicans or their party. He is on a self-serving mission. Not only is he ill-prepared, he announced way too early which just so happened to be the week Loughlin was leaving. So much for party unity.

Union benefits have gotten so inflated that now MANAGEMENT wants to unionize. Anyone that thinks unions are fulfilling their original purpose is deluded. I agree with Lance Chappell. Public employees are beginning to see the cutbacks are coming and they're scrambling to get as much as they can before it all ends. So much for the idea that the pension problems can be resolved through "shared sacrifice".

Mr. Benson is right on target. The public unions have been trying to grab all they before the end comes - and it is coming! Providence should be in Chapter 9 bankruptcy NOW. The politicians are advising the Mayor not to file as it would throw the entire state into a tailspin financially. Moody's came out yesterday with a negative view on the state's finances and the pension mess. Providence has similiar problems at a much larger scale in comparison. The brass in the fire department have to remember that they chose to join management!! No one twisted their arms. These people need to "man-up" and quit whining. The taxpayers can no longer afford your wages and benefit plans. Bring on Chapter 9 and put an end to this madness!

Carlin, I am not a spokesman for Col. Doherty, he speaks for himself. Please feel free to submit your questions through his campaign website at http://www.dohertyforcongress.com/

Also, I do not "work" for Col. Doherty as I am not paid. I volunteer for him.

Have a great day!

The solution is not for the chiefs to unionize; the solution is to reduce the benefits for the rank and file. public-employee unionized worker benefits are unaffordable and will cause the state economy to crumble if not reduced to acceptable levels that can be funded by reasonable city taxes. Also, more firefighters should be volunteers. This would reduce firefighting costs. Using Bureau of Labor and U.S. Census statistics, one can easily calculate the per capita cost of R.I. firefighters and compare this value against the same variable for all 50 states. R.I. per capita (person) firefighting cost are third (3rd) highest in the U.S. Obviously, firefighters are over compensated in in R.I., and unionizing the fire department management will only worsen this situation.

We should always CELEBRATE people becoming stronger in affirming their pro-life position! This is a good thing and in stark contrast to Cong. Cicilline. If you want to defeat Cicilline, quit the in-fighting and get on to the business of getting the strongest candidate who can WIN CROSSOVER VOTES (not a luxury, a requirement in a blue state like RI). I am for WHOEVER cand defeat Cicilline.
He is a disgrace to this state.

Let's get real... it is a GREAT thing when people become MORE PRO-LIFE. Do you WANT TO DEFEAT CICILLINE OR NOT? Doherty can get crossover votes... not a luxury ... A REQUIREMENT TO WIN IN RI! Doherty should be COMMENDED for putting out a more pro-life position; thus drawing a conrast between himself and Cicilline. All good... raise money, Brendan and get the people of District One some representation. Put an end to the Democrat controlled state once and for all. By the way, if Carcieri doesn't run against Whitehouse, District One is the ONLY chance to rid this state of a Democrat.
I am for the REPUBLICAN who can defeat Cicilline. I hear Segal is tossing his hat into the ring so maybe the Dems are sniffing the blodd in the water.

During the early 1990s, Lizzie Legault lived in our neighborhood in Point Judith. Ms. Legault was a good friend and neighbor who was then training to be an Olympic athlete. She was also student teaching, and her love for and dedication to, imparting knowledge to young minds was clearly apparent.

Nonsensical, inane 'charges' brought after an oddly, if not conveniently, prolongued so-called 'investigation' strike one as, at best, hinky. Very hinky.

But when they're lodged in overwrought manner against someone such as Ms. Legault, whose good character reputation as a fine educator preceeds her, they strongly suggest that some unspoken, skewed 'agenda' may at work, exactly as Ms. Legault's counsel, Mr. Sowa, suggests.

If that be the case, those waging this Judicial Terrorism would do well to stop it. Americans long been disenchanted by sub rosa vendettas waged against the innocent have, of late, proven adept at using The Net and Talk Radio to expose those who wage them.

My wife and I wish Ms. Legault success, firm in the belief she will prevail. Truth is on her side. Not theirs. She can tell her story to the public. They can't.
