“Thank you so much for the opportunity to be here. We are so thrilled to give back support to the city of Providence and the state of Rhode Island. We think this is a fabulous opportunity and honor for Alex and Ani,” said Conway of the new center.
The Alex and Ani Center was renamed after it was announced that the Cranston - based company landed the naming rights for the rink on November 14.

Conway joined Taveras in a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the re-branded ice rink promptly after the press conference.

GoLocalProv.com accepted the Metcalf Award for Diversity in the Media on Tuesday morning at Hotel Providence for their continued coverage of the Davey Lopes pool closing.
The award was presented by former State Representative Ray Rickman and accepted by Kate Nagle. Monica White, Tracey Minkin, Caitlin Gill, Dan Lawlor, and Anthony Faccenda were also honored.
"GoLocal reported on the successful community effort to open the Davey Lopes Pool in the other Providence," said Rickman. "GoLocal launched a media campaign to cover the story and educate the residents of both Providences. Some actually believe without GoLocal the community leaders would not have won the battle to get the Davey Lopes Pool opened. The exciting on-line news source is to be thanked for their wonderful use of photos and the language used and the constant reporting."
This is the 26th year the Metcalf Award has been awarded. The award is presented annually by Rhode Island for Community and Justice for outsatnding journalism with a focus on community driven issues.

Ken Block called out some of his other running mates for the Governor's race by pointing to partnerships between gubernatorial candidates Allan Fung, Gina Raimondo, and Angel Taveras and recently ousted Speaker of the House Gordon Fox, in a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
Block said that the ethics of Rhode Island politics needs to change and cited contributions that Raimondo, Fung, and Taveras made to Fox, as well as Raimondo and Taveras walking with Fox in his district while allegations of pay-to-play, corruption within the 38 Studios deal, and PEDP Loans were all taking place as evidence of ethical issues in the state.
In addition to calling out the other candidates for their relationships with Fox, Block called out Fung specifically by pointing out his accepted contributions from leaders of the Cranston Police Union, saying that these contributions were unacceptable.
"As Governor I will not accept any contributions from anyone who will be negotiating directly with the Governor's office," said Block. "Rhode Islanders deserve better than that and need to be able to have complete faith that their elected officials are acting solely in the best interests of their constituents."

March is here...Winter still rules...
If anyone tries to tell you that “there is no such thing as TOO MUCH of a good thing”, you can point to the missed opportunity of a major snowfall in the Northeast that is playing out as this week gets underway

Winter’s Back!!! After a brief interlude of more spring-like weather with milder temperatures and some rain late last week and over the weekend, colder air is on the march southeastward from Canada and will become the dominant air mass over the Northeast until further notice.

President’s Day week is in full swing at the resorts across the Northeast. Hundreds and hundreds of school districts are on vacation, and that is great news for the resorts, as they are now sporting their best conditions of this season. In fact, they are about as good as they can get, thanks to the snowy pattern that has dominated the region this month. A warm-up is on the way, but it won’t last long, and longer term, the season looks as though it is going to go flying into March with no signs of letting up.

I hope you were able to get out on the slopes over the weekend, because the slopes and trails of the northeast were in their best condition of the season thus far, thanks in large part to the major snowstorm of last Wednesday.

I am going to start this post by getting right to the heart of the matter concerning the weather and snow conditions…we are now entering a period that could end up being the snowiest week of the season across the Northeast, and you should be making your plans to head for the hills. This week is getting underway with a narrow stripe of moderate to heavy snow across the northern Mid-Atlantic States, metro New York and southern New England. Anywhere from 4 to as much as 8 inches of snow will fall today (Monday), with Long Island and central New Jersey the sweet spot for the highest amounts. Now, that sort of distribution of snow only benefits a handful of ski areas, but I think this storm is only the appetizer…the main course and desert are on the way over the next 7 days. By this time next week, resorts from northern New Jersey to Maine will have anywhere from 18 to as much as 30 inches of new snow for you to play on.

As we move into the final few days of the month of January...the coldest week of the year, climatologically, yet another shot of arctic air is sweeping into the Northeast. This will be the 4th time this year that a significant piece of cold has been delivered into the region without much in the way of moderation, thanks to the extensive snow cover over which it travelled from the high latitudes, as well as because of the speed with which it arrived.

Cold air has dominated thus far this month, as well, and the onslaught of crystal cranking has continued, with the guns firing 24/7 on a good number of days.
