Rhode Islanders are now facing a larger gap between their income and their housing costs, according to the 2009 American Community Survey performed by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Even though housing prices have decreased overall, the median household income has also decreased by $1,582 since 2008. The ACS survey goes on to indicate that the number of Rhode Islanders earning moderate income, low-income, and very-low-income has increased.

As Tax Credit Expires, Housing Prices Fall

According to data released by the RI Association of Realtors today, the number of single-family home sales dropped in July, by 34 percent versus July 2009, though the median price rose eight percent to $227,500 last month from $210,000 a year prior. The drop in the number was most likely caused by the expiration of the federal tax credit.

The good news was the number of distressed sales – foreclosures and short sales – down 54 percent from a year ago. The median price of non-distressed sales was $257,250. July marks only the second month of decreased sales in the past 16 months.

Urban Planning Without Controls

In 2005, Boston developers with a Providence partner proposed building the city's tallest structure in the heart of the financial district. In order to realize their superstructure condo tower, they sought and received city permission to tear down one of Providence's distinct and historical building - the Old Colony Bank Building. Rhode Island's architectural conscience, Mack Woodward calls the decision-makers out. Five years later, the hole in the ground remains, a bizarre rusted scaffolding scars Weybosset Street, and no one takes responsibility for the chaotic decision-making.
