The Arcade: What’s at Stake
Thursday, September 30, 2010
It is historic, iconic, neglected.
As new buildings rise in various corners of downtown Providence, one of its most revered structures, the Westminster Arcade, sits abandoned. The first enclosed shopping mall in the United States, the Arcade was built in 1828, then closed in 2008 is anticipation of a major renovation. Two years (and no renovation) later, GoLocalProv's Sam Valorose went up the famous granite steps and brought with him James Hall, Executive Director of the Providence Preservation Society, to talk it over.

Being evicted from the Arcade after 23 years in business it saddens me to see the building closed and neglected.
Thank you for your efforts in bringing this embarrassment to the awareness of the people of Rhode Island.
The Arcade is nothing less than the heart of our capital city and it is my opinion that it is NOT a lack of money but a lack of insight and caring on behalf of the owner that keeps it as an eyesore.

I installed the tile floor in the building quite a while ago, what a masterpiece of a building, what great architectual value for the city. The history of this building is a treasure
