ELECTION RESULTS: GOP Makes Modest Gains in General Assembly

Republicans gained only eight seats in the General Assembly, despite a major effort by the state party to change the makeup of both the House and the Senate. The Republicans now hold a total of 18 seats in the General Assembly, according to a GoLocalProv review of the vote tallies in all the races. That’s a modest improvement from the 10 seats the GOP had before the election.

LIVE ELECTION UPDATE Voters Keep State Name, Approve Bond Questions

Rhode Islanders overwhelming rejected a proposal to eliminate “plantations” from the state name while approving three bond questions by large majorities.

As a result of the vote, the state now is authorized to obtain the following bonds: $78 million for building construction and renovations at the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College, $84.7 million for improvements to the state’s roads, bridges, and highways, and $14.7 million for the purchase of open space land.
