Young Republicans Blast House Budget

Thursday, June 23, 2011

The $7.7 billion budget set to go in front of the full House tomorrow is “caters to government employees, hikes taxes, and fails to set our state on a path toward recovery,” according to Rhode Island Young Republicans chairman Travis Rowley.

The budget, approved last week by the House Finance Committee, has been criticized on both sides of the aisle in recent days. On the right, conservatives argue that instead of a sales tax expansion that will generate just $17 million in new revenue, the House should be making more cuts to entitlement programs. On the left, already deep cuts to the Neighborhood Opportunities Program and a failure to implement a combined reporting system for large businesses has come under fire.

In response to the budget proposal, Rowley created a Facebook group called, “Republicans Against the House Budget.” To date, the group has 212 members.

“The Young Republicans decided to start the online group to spark a discussion after the Democrats rammed this out of committee,” Rowley said. “Unfortunately, there has been little public participation in this process, so we decided to give taxpayers an outlet to voice their frustration. There seems to be some agreement amongst our members that it makes no sense for Republicans to endorse a Democratic agenda."

Rowley maintains that no Republicans should vote in favor of the budget.

"The Republican Party works extremely hard to show the public that we represent an alternative path,” Rowley said. “But signing on to this mediocre plan would only give Democrats political cover. Our votes are precious. We either represent something different, or we don't."
