Will Republicans Take Back the Senate?

Monday, July 19, 2010

From the nomination of Jack McConnell to the senior leadership positions of Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse to funding for infrastructure repairs to Rhode Island, there is alot at stake in whether Democrats or Republicans maintain control of the United States Senate in 2011.

Currently, there are 59 members of the Democratic Caucus (including independent Lieberman and socialist Saunders).  Thus, Republicans would need to win 51 seats to retain control of the Senate since, in a 50-50 tie, the Vice President votes to break the tie.  That means Republicans need a change of 10 votes in the November elections.  Do they have a shot?

I think so.  But it's very slim.
