Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich today said Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District race between Congressman David Cicilline and Republican Brendan Doherty will be a key barometer of whether “citizens are willing to go out and vote for real change,” in this year’s election.

"You have a race right there in Rhode Island which is a good test case of whether or not an honest citizen can win an election against somebody who just has a terrible, terrible record," Gingrich said.

Gingrich’s comments came during a special Election Day show on 920WHJJ.

The former Presidential candidate also weighed on the key races around the country as well as the Presidential race between President Obama and Mitt Romney. Gingrich predicted that turnout will not be as high for Obama this year as it was in 2008.

“I will be pretty surprised if Obama has anything like the turnout he had in 2008,” Gingrich said. “The democrats are not as excited as they were in 2008. Republicans are more excited.”

Gingrich claimed that some of the biggest challenges Republican candidate faces is the Democratic advantage in minority communities and what he calls a bias in the news media. Gingrich ripped the media protecting for President Obama too much.

“I’ve never seen the news media protect a candidate as much as I've seen them protect Obama,” he said. “This gives us a disadvantage we still have to overcome.”
