Welcome back to The Scoop, the 4 p.m. report on everything politics in Rhode Island – the inside daily report exclusively on GoLocalProv.com.
With the General Election now 41 days away, GoLocal is bringing you the daily campaign updates of note -- who's getting new endorsements, bringing in money, or making big, bold announcements, with all eyes on November 4.
In today's Scoop, Zurier challenges the recent Providence City Council Democratic Caucus, Harrop responds to the recent Projo/WPRI poll, and the release of the RI Voter's Guide.
Following Buddy Cianci's endorsements Tuesday by the Providence police union and firefighters, Magaziner and Almonte have also up picked endorsements.
Providence Firefighters Local 799 Endorses Cianci for Mayor
Local 799 President Paul Doughty said, “This endorsement isn’t based on some romanticized notion we have about Buddy Cianci, but on a single measure. And that is, who is better prepared to grow the city’s tax base. Buddy’s skill and experience with bringing practical development plans to fruition speak volumes as to why Providence Firefighters are proud to endorse Buddy Cianci as Mayor of the City of Providence.”
IBEW Local 99 Endorses Seth Magaziner
“Seth has consistently stood with hard working Rhode Islanders and will fight for good jobs. Seth understands how the Treasurer’s office can be used to spur our economy and put Rhode Islanders back to work,” said Michael Daley, Business Manager of IBEW Local 99. “This makes Seth the clear choice for our members and all Rhode Islanders who want to see Rhode Island get back on track.”
Ernie Almonte Endorsed by R.I. State Association of Fire Fighters and R.I. Brotherhood of Correctional Officers
“The spectrum of experience between these two candidates is completely one-sided,” said Richard Ferruccio, President of the Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers. “Ernie is the only candidate with the expertise to start getting the job done on day one.”
Republican candidate for Mayor Dr. Harrop has responded to the recent WPRI/ProJo poll that showed Cianci in the lead of the Mayoral race.
Harrop said, “I am on the campaign trail sharing my vision with Providence residents. My plan will help our Capital City be the shining city on the hill that all Rhode Islanders deserve. With media buys set through November 4th, and public appearances and meetings almost every day, I continue to actively pursue the mayorship. It will become apparent to the citizens of Providence that only the Republicans have realistic, workable plans to save our municipal pensions, expand educational choice in the city, reduce property taxes, eliminate the car tax, and re-establish financial stability in Providence. We intend to release an ambitious plan to attract jobs to Providence within the week. I look forward to continuing this campaign, and bringing Ethical Leadership That Cares to Providence."
Regulate RI is citing a new article as evidence for marijuana legalization
The study demonstrates that the nationwide legalization would bring in more than $3 billion in state and local tax revenue annually.
On their Facebook page, Regulate RI wrote, "$3 billion that's currently being used to fund organized crime. There are a lot better things we could do with all that money like improve our schools, fix our crumbling infrastructure, and provide adequate treatment and recovery services for families struggling with mental illness and substance dependence."
RI Senate President Paiva Weed has unveiled her new Facebook page.
Paiva's first post said, "Welcome to my Facebook page! I'll be adding pictures and information from the campaign as often as possible so come back soon! P.S. The bridge photo is by a great local photographer and my yard sign hangs in a wonderful wooden frame at the 5th Ward house of some very longtime friends."
DLT will use the federal funds to study the effectiveness of the Rhode Island Temporary Caregiver Insurance Program and its benefits for Rhode Islanders.
