Who’s Hot

View Larger +

Lincoln Chafee -> Governor Chafee caught a lot of heat this week for trying to look for some silver lining in the unfortunate situation that is Central Falls. That was both unfair and quite frankly, silly. Chafee, who is in no way responsible for Central Falls, said what any Governor would say when one of his cities went bankrupt (what was he going to do, predict doom and gloom?). Furthermore, he was right. Bankruptcy is the only chance this city has to pull itself back together.

M. Teresa Paiva Weed -> Speaking of Central Falls, kudos to the Senate President for defending the General Assembly’s decision not to throw a raft to the sinking city. A few million can’t save a city in dire need of a total overhaul. Lawmakers on Smith Hill didn’t get everything right during the last session, but in this case, they were spot-on.

James Langevin -> The Congressman joins the rest of the Delegation on the Not List (see below), but he does deserve some credit this week for at least attempting to refocus everyone’s attention on a jobs problem that doesn’t appear to be getting much better anytime soon. Let’s hope people start paying attention.

Rhode Island Retirement Security Coalition -> Rhode Island already has RISC; now it has RIRSC and it’s safe to say the two groups won’t be sending gifts to each other come Christmas time. This public sector union-led group will be criticized a lot in the coming months, but if your retirement fund was at stake, wouldn’t you want a united group advocating for you?

James Doyle -> After all the talk of how the voter id law will impact turnout in future elections, it’s nice to see State Sen. Doyle sponsor legislation that will allow for more mail ballots, which should increase voting numbers. That’s what Rhode Islanders should want. An actual majority of the residents deciding who will run our state. Kudos to Sen. Doyle for getting this law passed.

James Diossa -> One of the young politicians that truly cares about Central Falls kept his head held high Monday despite all that was taking place with his city. Here’s hoping the city can recover and this guy winds up being the Mayor some day.

Cumberland American Little League -> Not politics, but there is no better time of the year than the Little League World Series. Cumberland American is representing Rhode Island in the New England regional tournament that begins Saturday in Bristol, CT. As in past years, games will probably be televised locally, so if you can’t head to Connecticut to root for them in person, make sure you support the youngsters on television.

Who’s Not

Rhode Island’s Congressional Delegation -> Each member of Rhode Island’s Congressional Delegation sent word this week that despite the long list of reasons why they did not support the debt deal, they were voting for it anyway. C’mon guys. If you don’t like the bill and you don’t think it helps Rhode Islanders, why support it?

David Cicilline -> He’s a member of the Progressive Caucus and represents one of the bluest districts in the country, but Congressman Cicilline decided to support an amendment that will restore travel restrictions to Cuba. This won’t make the East Side happy.

Barry Hinckley -> Rough week for the Hinckley campaign. Both he and his consultant (and GoLocalProv MINDSETTER) were taken to task for allegedly making claims that then proved (well, sort of) to be false. Whether they were right or wrong, it just doesn’t look good for Hinckley to be called a liar when he’s trying to put his campaign together.

Providence Republicans -> The city’s GOP Chair made her talk radio debut this week and while she did a fine job, Republicans in the Capital City have one significant barrier in their way: The top Republicans in Providence claim to be Democrats. Until you get that crowd to convert, it will be difficult to accomplish anything else.

Charles Moreau -> For a guy who has consistently made headlines for some of the shady decisions he made in recent years, it’s a little disingenuous to claim zero responsibility for the Central Falls bankruptcy. This may not be his fault completely, but the former Mayor certainly deserves some of the blame.

Central Falls -> Enough said.
