Victor Capellan

It's been a good year or so for the new Superintendent of Central Falls Schools. After flirting with a mayoral bid of his own last year, he backed off and backed Elorza, and then earlier this year he became Providence Democrat Party Chairman. Capellan is clearly good at politics, now let's hope he can deliver for Central Falls school children.

Nellie Gorbea

The Secretary of State had a good week in the news after unveiling legislation that would allow voters to register online to vote, improve the integrity of voter rolls, allow early in-person voting, and strengthen rules regarding the handling of mail ballots. All of those reforms would be a positive step towards more participation in our Democratic system.

ACLU of Rhode Island

Give the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union some credit for calling out Motel 6 and the Warwick Police Department for requesting a list of all patrons who have stayed at the hotel and giving it up respectively--all without notifying those patrons. As the ACLU pointed out, people who stay there expect to be treated like guests, with some degree of privacy, not potential criminals.

Providence College Hockey

The Providence Friars men's hockey team won the national championship last week on the heels of great goal tending by Junior Jon Gillies, who was signed this week by the Calgary Flames, as well as a lucky bounce (directly into the opposing net) on the other side of the ice. Having the best college hockey team in the nation--that's hot!

Pawtucket Red Sox

First GoLocalProv reported that the team owners brought in consultants to study the economic impact of the team being located in Providence who have a reputation for telling their customers exactly what they want to hear. Then the owners had the gall to ask Rhode Island taxpayers to spend more than $100 million on a stadium that will cost $85 million to build.

Aaron Hernandez

The former Patriots star tight end was found guilty of murdering Oden LLoyd, his former friend. It's simply unspeakable how someone who was seemingly on top of the world could commit a crime as senseless as it was heinous.

Deval Patrick

The former Massachusetts Governor is sure cashing in on his former position as Governor. First, he took a job as a $7,500 a day lobbyist on behalf of the 2024 Olympics, and then it was announced this week that he landed a job at Bain Capital--the financial firm Mitt Romney was vilified for co-founding during the 2012 Presidential election by Democrats like Patrick.

Providence Police Department

The Providence Police Task Force has been suspended after reports of a community activists son being roughed up by police officers for no reason. The Task Force is oriented towards keeping the community safe, and the fact that it has been suspended due to complaints against police officers is unfortunate and if the accusations are true, it is unacceptable.

Providence College Celebration

The students at Providence College should be ashamed of themselves for acting in an unruly manner when they celebrated the hockey team's national championship. It's fine to celebrate and even get loud, but to act in a riotous manner, and for one student to have thrown a bottle that struck a Providence Police Officer in the head, causing a concussion, is sickening. Why spoil such a tremendous accomplishment?
