John McConnell

It was a good week in the news for the federal judge after he made two popular, common sense rulings. First McConnell ruled that the oldest synagogue in the United States will remain under the control of its congregation, the Touro Synagogue in Newport, instead of Shearith Israel. The dispute arose over two sets of bells that the Newport congregation had agreed to sell to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for more than $7 million back in 2011. McConnell also ruled this week that Eugene "Neil" Fachon could continue experimental treatment for a dangerous form of pediatric cancer he is fighting.

Avon Cinema

The historic Thayer Street Theater--a cool venue known for showing movies marketed towards people looking for something different than typical Hollywood "blockbusters"--hosted the International Ocean Film Tour on Monday. Providence filmmaker Carlos Andres Toro's film "The Edge: A Sharklovers Guide to the Sea" was picked as one of the Tour's feature films and was shown on Monday.

Theresa Agonia

Miss Rhode Island 2016, who doubles as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, appeared on the John DePetro show this week to promote the pageant. She was subject to criticism for her appearance since DePetro is still subject to a union boycott over some of his comments about teachers union members, but good for Agonia for appearing on the show and not letting petty politics prevent her from promoting the issues she believes in.

Brian Principe

The Providence City Councilman who represents Federal Hill as well as portions of downtown and the west end was selected as the body's majority leader on Thursady night, in the wake of Kevin Jackson's arrest by state police for embezzlement and campaign finance violations. Here's hoping Principe can help lead the body effectively during some turbulent times as these.

United Nurses and Allied Professionals

The nurses union held a press conference with elected officials on Wednesday to call on Governor Gina Raimondo to halt efforts to shut down primary care services for patients at Pawtucket's Memorial Hospital. That hospital is critical for patients, particularly in Pawtucket, East Providence, and Central Falls, and the state should do everything in its power to protect that asset and prevent Care New England from closing services there.

Brown Lacrosse

The Brown University Bears continue their quest for the NCAA Lacrosse Championship on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Stadium when they take on Navy, who is coming off an upset victory over Yale last Sunday. Here's hoping Brown can win and continue their quest to bring a national championship back to Providence.

Karen MacBeth

The boat sank before it even left the dock. The state representative from Cumberland, who a few weeks ago switched political parties from Democrat to Republican, and announced a run for Congress against David Cicilline has changed her mind and dropped out of the race. MacBeth told GoLocal when she announced she didn't think money would be an issue -- "I'd be starting fresh, but that's OK" she said, but somewhere along the line she figured out she was up against an opponent with a formidable war chest, and wasn't up for the task of getting on the blower on a daily basis to sing for her supper.

Mark Weiner

Reporting from the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post has tied a $2 million commitment from the Clinton Foundation to a for profit energy company named Pioneer Energy that is owned in part by Rhode Island’s Mark Weiner--a longtime Clinton backer and fundraiser from Rhode Island. It's starting to look like the Clinton Foundation is little more than a tool to award friends of the Clintons.

Patricia Morgan

Make no mistake about it: the Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives is one of the best legislators in the state of Rhode Island, routinely standing up for average citizens against special interest groups. But it wasn't a great week in the news after GoLocal revealed that Morgan, who has vehemently criticized legislative grants since the resignation of former House Finance Chairman Ray Gallison, herself asked for a legislative grant for the Gaspee Days Parade in Warwick this year, and asked for thousands from former House Speaker Gordon Fox in previous years.

Bernie Sanders

The socialist from Vermont has defied almost all reasonable expectations throughout his campaign, even winning several states including Rhode Island in dominant fashion. But the writing is on the wall, and its clear that Hillary Clinton is going to win the nomination. Sanders should be gracious and acknowledge his defeat. Instead, he has vowed to continue on. What's worse, when his supporters at the Nevada Democratic convention were unruly, at best, and in some cases, downright violent, he sent out a weak statement that didn't fully condemn them. That, from a candidate who couldn't condemn the violence at the Trump rallies fast enough.

Trinity Rep

The theater company is under fire from the Brown University theater community for its casting decisions, particularly with how they relate to race. The students point out some questionable casting decisions in a recent production of "To Kill A Mockingbird", and for producing "Oklahoma" a play that has been criticized for whitewashing over the racism of that period. Trinity's Joe Wilson Jr. responded in kind, but it's not the kind of PR anyone is looking for there.

Hedge Funds

At this point, it's starting to seem like there's at least one negative article in a major news outlet every day about how hedge funds are extremely costly, opaque, and produce low returns on investment. Just last week, Business Insider, the New York Times, and Bloomberg all ran articles exposing the folly of hedge funds. Meanwhile, the New York City Comptroller has pledged to drastically scale back the city's pension fund investments in hedge funds. What is Rhode Island waiting for?
