Hillary Clinton

Since the United States Justice Department accepted the recommendation of the FBI to not charge the former First Lady and Secretary of State with the misuse of classified emails, Clinton should be able to finally put this scandal behind her. Without a doubt, Clinton has suffered a negative news cycle, but the larger takeaway here is that she won’t be charged. That allows her to move on and focus on the presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Patrick Kennedy

The former Congressman from Rhode Island continues to make headlines, the latest for his opposition to Democratic National Committee supporting the legalizing of marijuana as part of its platform. The Congressman, and likeminded groups and individuals point out that legalizing marijuana will lead to companies marketing it towards children and will therefore have a negative impact on the country’s youth. It’s not easy to refute their argument.

North Providence Mayor’s Race

Charles Lombardi, the Mayor of North Providence, is in for a tough reelection campaign against North Providence Councilwoman Kristen J. Catanzaro. It’s starting to look like the race will likely be the most competitive race outside of the state legislature this year. Lombardi is already hard at work, reminding voters of his fiscal achievements, while Catanzaro is hammering away at what she considers questionable hires and spending. Stay tuned to this race as it could be close.

Pawsox Hall of Fame

The team announced that its inaugural Hall of Fame entrants will be Jim Rice, Wade Boggs and Ben Mondor. The induction will take place prior to the team’s game on Friday, July 29. Obviously, all three men deserve the honor, but I have to say I would have preferred seeing the first inaugural class have just one member—Mondor, an owner who always put the fans before profits and we were all better off because of it.

Providence Police Beating

GoLocalProv obtained an exclusive video on Thursday of a Providence Police officer appearing to punch a defenseless woman in the head multiple times while trying to break up a domestic disturbance situation. This incident obviously needs to be thoroughly investigated and the officer in question will be called on to explain himself. At first blush. this is a disturbing video of apparent use of excessive force which will incense police/community tensions in our city.

Jorge Elorza

Roughly one year after the Mayor of Providence announced the restructuring of the Providence Fire Department, in an attempt to save money, the department is characterized by chaos and on the job injuries. Just this week 8 firefighters were hurt at a house fire on Orms Street—the latest in a series of injuries at fires over the last year. Elorza would have been better served—both politically and fiscally—if he had attempted to seek savings across city government, similar to former Mayor Angel Taveras’s approach in 2011, as opposed to simply picking on the fire department.

John Silvia

The operating manager of Seastreak, the operator of the new Providence-Newport ferry service, is overseeing a rough beginning to the start of the season this year. The new service lacked a reservation system on Saturday and Sunday of its opening weekend, which then caused dozens of passengers to miss a return ferry from Newport to Providence Sunday evening. Further, it appears as if the company is deleting negative comments on its Facebook page in an effort to help preserve its image and has stopped answering media calls.

Patrick Churchville

The owner of ClearPath Wealth Management, LLC and Barrington resident has pleaded guilty to running a $21 million Ponzi Scheme, as well as theft and use of $2.5 million of investors' funds to purchase his home, and his failure to pay more than $820,000 in personal federal income taxes. It's sad to see people obsessed by greed who then decide to victimize others. It never ends well for anyone involved.

Mega Millions

This massive multi-state lottery hit its highest point in history this week, $508 million ahead of today's drawing, and that’s sent millions of folks scampering for lottery tickets and a chance to win a fortune. But the lottery is, and always has been, and always will be, a tax on people who cannot do math. Your chances of winning aren’t worth the price of the lottery ticket and buying one has always been and always will be a bad investment.

Newspaper Industry

The last two months have been absolutely brutal for newspapers. The industry is shedding jobs, losing advertisers and circulation across the industry is in an absolute free-fall. It gives me no pleasure to say it, but it won’t be long until folks will refer to newspapers the same way we think about Polaroid pictures.

Rudeness

The City of Providence was ranked 13th in the nation by Travel + Leisure for its “rudeness”, stating that we have a tendency to be “bookish and aloof”. Unfortunately, anyone Rhode Island native or longtime resident knows there is more than a hint of truth to this charge. Maybe it’s time we amp up the friendliness?
