Chapel Grille

The Cranston restaurant has announced that it will honor gift certificates up to $100 in value, from the Faial Restaurant, from July 27 to August 1. Faial closed abruptly, and for good, earlier this month, leaving those with gift certificates out of luck. That was until Chapel Grille stepped forward. The two establishents had absolutely no relationship, but the Chapel Grille wanted to do someting good or Rhode Islanders. If that's not good corporate citizenship, I'm not sure what is.

The state Democratic Party Chairman is taking steps to increase participation in the party. The Chairman sent out a press release asking interested Rhode Island Democrats to become caucus members for the 2016 elections. Caucus members "discuss the role of opportunities of constituency groups, identify potential candidates for local and state offices, and help the party counsel and train candidates", according to the release.

Nellie Gorbea

The Secretary of State bounced back from a tough news cycle last week, by announcing that the state has received a $35,000 grant from the Knight Foundation's Knight Prototype Fund that will be used to promote increased voter participation among Rhode Island's youth. A more educated, informed, and involved youth voter population would be good not just for youngsters, but the whole state as well.

IYRS

The IYRS School of Technology hosted a gala event two weeks ago that featured The Beach Boys and raised over $1 million for the school, which is dedicated to teaching highly technical and deeply craft oriented career skills. That's a good sign for a school educating students in important areas such as the marine trades--exactly the type of jobs Rhode Island needs.

#300 Women

A grass roots organization comprised of (primarily) minority female volunteers has elected a new board of directors including Diana Garlington, President;. Kira Wills, Vice President; Lisa Scorpio, Social Media and PR; and Leah Seaton, Treasurer. The group is currently volunteering at the Providence Midnight Basketball League Games, but will continue to do what they can to improve our community. It's always nice to see good people stepping forward to do what's right to make things better!

Allan Fung

The Mayor of Cranston actually decided to order a police investigation after a former Woonsocket Mayoral candidate, who also co-hosts a weekend radio show on 630 WPRO, called his house around 9 p.m. on Monday evening to ask him why there was a police detail at one of the Pawtucket Red Sox listening tour stops (in Cranston). Look, I get that the mayor was unhappy to be pestered with a (relatively) late night phone call, but Fung's overreaction was highly inappropriate--to put it mildly. Let's hope nobody calls the police on the mayor next time he's running a phone bank for one of his upcoming elections.

Gina Raimondo

Ironically, both major candidates in last year's gubernatorial contest find themselves ice cold this week. The Governor ran a campaign last year promising to grow jobs, and her first budget focuses on empowering the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation to facilitate the process. Yet the Commerce Corporation didn't even have a single meeting with Teespring, Rhode Island's hottest company that's been compared to Uber and AirBNB, before it decided to move to Kentucky and take its 300 manufacturing jobs with it. That's incompetence.

Angel Taveras

It's been more than 6 months since Taveras formally left the mayor's office last year, but the bad news won't subside for the former mayor for some reason. RINPR reports that the former Mayor is being sued for allegedly firing a former public works director in 2012 for refusing to hire unqualified individuals.

A faulty mail sorting machine at the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training accidentally caused Social Security Numbers of as many as 832 Unemployment Insurance customers to be misdirected and exposed to the wrong employers or customers. Let's hope the individuals in question suffer no financial harm due to the error, both for their sake and the sake of the state.

Golocal's Stephen Beale reports this week that there is currently $318 million in child support owed by Rhode Island men. That's unacceptable. People who have children should have the integrity to support their children.

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox had lost 7 games in a row going into Thursday night's game, and with the team in last place in their division with the worst record in the American League, it's clear now that fans should abandon all hope of the team reaching the post season for the second time in two years. Football season can't get here fast enough for New England sports fans.
