WHO'S HOT

Marriage Equality  ->  A new polls shows that 59% of Rhode Islanders support marriage equality while only 31% are opposed.  When will the General Assembly allow an up or down vote on this issue on the floor of the House and the Senate and remove the stain of Rhode Island being 1 of 2 New England states which does not recognize marriage equality?

Lincoln Chafee  ->  Aloof no more!  Linc took off the gloves when Republican Governor Don Carcieri refused to let this former Republican Senator speak at the EDC against the outrageous taxpayer-guaranteed $75 million Schilling 38 Studios deal.  Linc's camp responded by calling Carcieri's move an example of the "arrogance of power."  Absolutely.  What is the Governor afraid of?

Mosque Developers  ->  Love 'em or hate 'em, they're certainly firing up the political scene this week!

Bill Lynch  ->  Loved the tactic of questioning whether Gemma voted in the presidential election.  Classic trap.  Gemma then eagerly rushed to prove that he voted in the 2008 general election, at which point Lynch pointed out that he meant the Presidential Primary election between Obama and Clinton -- making the point that "Democrat" Gemma did not vote in the highest turnout Democratic Primary in the history of Rhode Island.  Touche, Bill!

Steven Pare, Richard Sullivan, Norman Orodenker  ->  Kudos to this former State Police Colonel, Providence Police Chief and member of the United States Civil Rights Advisory Commission for Rhode Island respectively for getting involved in the political process and using their collective experience and acumen to improve public policy in the capital city.  This group advised Providence mayoral candidate Angel Taveras on his recently released policing and public safety plan.

David Bennett  ->  In 2008, Bennett stunned the political world by narrowly losing to Erin Lynch in an open state senate race.  Now, he's taking on the gadfly Representative Al Gemma.  He's picking up lots of steam with endorsements from labor and community groups.  And, a Bennett victory would almost guarantee that House sessions would end an hour earlier each night as a result of Gemma's absence.

WHO'S NOT

Clean Slate  ->  This latest PR gimmick by the RI Republican Party is aptly named since there are less than a dozen Republicans in the 113 member General Assembly.  Will the Republicans gain seats this year?  Likely.  Even a broken clock is right twice a day.  But, there will be massive shifts in the balance of power.  No.  Why?  They simply don't have enough competent candidates.

John Robitaille  ->  This former Carcieri staffer's claim that Frank Caprio is anti-business is laughable considering the amount of support that Caprio has in the business community.  What's next?  Accusing Chafee of being against the environment?  C'mon man!

North Providence Councilmen Burchfield, Douglas, Zambarano   ->  The latest indictments against these former Councilmen presents a dour picture of how business gets done - or doesn't get done - in North Providence.  Hopefully, this crackdown by the feds will continue to root out the corruption that holds our state back from getting our economy back on track.

Victor Moffit  ->  This former state representative incredulously claimed that he would like the endorsement of Sarah Palin if he could get it.  The last time I checked, Palin was overwhelmingly unpopular in Rhode Island.  Stick with the aquarium, Vic!

Jeremy Kapstein  ->  I really can't add anything more to this.

Tax Breaks  ->  The latest state report detailing how $40 million was handed out to businesses with no concrete job creation resulting is outrageous.  Corporate welfare with no accountability for job creation should be halted immediately.
