Side of the Rhode: Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in RI Politics?

Who’s Hot

Lincoln Chafee -> Kudos to the Governor for rescinding Governor’s Carcieri’s executive order. Nice to see a politician living up to his campaign promises. And you know what? If he wants to hawk his book on the state’s Web site, so be it. Just make sure the proceeds go to the deficit.

Gay marriage -> It’s looking more and more like Rhode Island will become the last state in New England to legalize same-sex marriage. It should pass the House, but then eyes will turn to Senate president Teresa Paiva Weed, who does not support gay marriage.

Angel Taveras -> The number of people who turned out on a frigid afternoon to celebrate Mayor Taveras being sworn in was a true sign of unity in a city so desperate for an honest leader.

Jack McConnell -> It’s too soon to call, but with his nomination back in the Senate, McConnell may finally get that U.S. District Court judgeship he so clearly deserves.

Sam Zurier and David Salvatore -> Two newly elected Providence City Councilmen who get it. Proving they’re committed to making concessions themselves before asking others to do so, Zurier and Salvatore opted out of the special pension the city gives to elected officials.

Dan McKee -> Mayor McKee continues to show he understands what both reformers and unions apparently do not: Both sides need to work together to fix our failing public schools.

Who’s Not

Anthony Gemma -> The failed Congressional candidate who essentially let Buddy Cianci run his campaign took a pathetic cheap shot at Congressman Cicilline this week. Not the best way to stay in the news, Mr. Gemma.

President Obama -> The President continues to put corporations over constituents with his appointment of Bill Daley as Chief of Staff.

Peter Kilmartin -> Our new AG is getting off to a bad start. The “Secure Communities” initiative is just another way of targeting Latinos while Congress fails to reform immigration on the federal level.

Rhode Island Supreme Court -> Started the new year off right by making it a lot more difficult for retirement boards to revoke pensions based on dishonorable service. Unbelievable.

Providence Police Department -> Apparently, the PPD has no regard for the deteriorating financial conditions of the city.

PC Men’s Basketball -> Not politics, but this needs to be said. A team that barely makes an effort on defense doesn’t belong in the Big East. It will never happen, but PC, along with eight or nine other small private schools from around the region, ought to start their own league. Because that’s the only prayer this team has of seeing the NCAA tournament again.
