Who’s Hot

Sheldon Whitehouse -> While the rest of our Congressional delegation is seemingly AWOL, Senator Whitehouse actually got something done in Washington this week when his bill to restrict excessively loud television commercials was signed into law. Not bad, but if I’m being honest, I’ll take that screaming pig ad over Glenn Beck and Keith Olbermann any day of the week. Get to work, Senator!

Ken McKay -> Appears to be the favorite to become the next chairman of the state GOP. His reward: A party with zero statewide office holders and a whole slate of politicians who would rather run as independents or flat out lie about being Democrats than associate with Republicans.

Richard Holbrooke -> Everyone wants to leave the world better than they found it. Well, Holbrooke did it. The Brown graduate was a timeless figure in American diplomacy who worked with various administrations to help strengthen our country’s relationship with the rest of the world. It’s a shame we often fail to appreciate the incredible work people like Holbrooke did until they’re gone.

John J. Tassoni Jr -> Kudos to the state Senator from Smithfield for making bullying prevention his top priority during the upcoming Senate year. It’s about time we had leaders step up and tackle this serious issue.

Earmarks -> Ladies and gentlemen, the Republican strategy for 2012: Rail against government spending, but then criticize our Congressional delegation for not doing enough to help the state. Seriously, does anyone realize how much Rhode Island depends on earmarked monies? You will when it’s not there.

Who’s Not

Central Falls Teachers -> I know it’s not all of them. But with a 15 percent daily absentee rate, something drastic needs to happen down in Central Falls. It is unconscionable what some of these teachers are doing to the students of CFHS.

Central Falls Administration -> That turnaround model has morphed into a downward spiral. You can thank an administration that chose to make national headlines rather than coming up with an actual solution last year.

City of Providence -> Competitions make for great PR. You know what doesn’t? When you choose a bridge designed by a Detroit firm over one from Providence. So much for that Creative Capital title a company in Nashville gave us.

Governor Carcieri -> Enough with all the heartfelt goodbyes for Disaster Don. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, Governor.

Peter Petrarca -> Remind me again why anyone would feel the need to carry a gun to a club filled with underage JWU students.

Terence Livingston -> At $4,000 per year, the Cranston City Council is probably underpaid. But Livingston, the Council Vice President, was out of his mind to try to get himself a 100 percent raise. Talk about bad timing.
