RI Progressive Democrats Endorse Carbone for Mayor of Warwick

Thursday, July 19, 2018

Gerald Carbone gets endorsed by RI Progressive Democrats for Warwick Mayor

Mayoral candidate Gerald Carbone has won the endorsement from the Rhode Island Progressive Democrats of America (RIPDA).

Carbone is the chairman of the Warwick Public Library Board of Trustees and is making his first run at a public office.

“We at RIPDA are proud to endorse Gerald Carbone for Mayor of Warwick. At RIPDA, we endorse candidates whose approach to government reflects our progressive values, and Gerald is no exception. He spoke about his frustrations with the insider, machine-run politics that characterizes so much of the RI Democratic party and he shares our desire to bring the party's policy priorities back into sync with the working class, people-first values that Democrats are supposed to stand for and that most RI Democratic voters believe in,” said Progressive Democrats spokesman Grant Metts.

Carbone will accept the endorsement in a ceremony at City Park on Friday at 4 p.m.

Upon receiving the endorsement, Carbone released the following statement:

“The late Congressman Tip O’Neill famously said: ‘All politics is local. Here at City Park I want to turn that axiom around and observe: All politics is global. Federal policy affects what we are able to do on the local level, and what we do here affects our environment on a larger scale.

Under current projections, sea level rise will dramatically affect Warwick within a generation, causing frequent floods in Conimicut, erosion at the Gaspee Plat, and destruction of marshes here in Buttonwoods. We can save money and reduce our energy use by converting street lights to LED lighting, by installing solar street lights along city-owned paths and parking lots, and by replacing the city’s fleet of cars with battery powered vehicles.

The health of our ecosystem and the health of our children depends upon responsible energy use to reduce our emission of heat trapping gases, and planning ahead for sea level rise. When I am mayor I will join the Climate Mayors Network, a peer to peer network willing to demonstrate leadership on climate change.”
