RI Campaign Update – Staff Changes on Taveras Campaign
Wednesday, September 01, 2010
Staff changes on the Taveras campaign. Mayoral candidate focuses on waterfront redevelopment. Second Congressional District candidates spar over submarine production… and more from the campaign trail.
Angel Taveras has hired Chris Nocera, a former Buddy Cianci aide and second cousin once removed to campaign manager Lauren Nocera, to coordinate the get-out-the-vote efforts in his run for Providence mayor. Nocera came on board last Sunday, after the previous GOTV coordinator resigned for family reasons, according to Lauren Nocera.

Providence mayoral candidate Steven Costantino announced he would maintain industrial zoning along the city’s waterfront and would create a Waterfront Development Authority to spearhead the redevelopment of underutilized properties.
“Providence is blessed with rich resources and the working waterfront is a project the city must make a priority. We must be clear with investors that the zoning in this area is predictable and it is long term. Without this guarantee, we risk losing valuable investment and future jobs,” Costantino said.
Segal Endorsed by Progressive Caucus
David Segal has been endorsed by the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC, which is comprised of 83 Democratic members of Congress.
“I am extremely honored to accept the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC’s endorsement and support,” said Segal, who is running for the Second Congressional District seat. “The Congressional Progressive Caucus exists to push the United States Congress to do more to represent ordinary Americans, and not just the corporate and wealthy interests who have too much power in Washington.”
Kilmartin Promises Crackdown on Housing Abuses
Attorney General candidate Peter Kilmartin elaborated on his plans to combat housing abuses. Kilmartin said he would expand the mortgage fraud task force in the Attorney General’s office and monitor funds given through the federal Home and Affordable Modification Program to make sure they address predatory lending practices. He also said he would push to make mortgage fraud a felony and create a hotline for people to report incidents of housing scams.
“As Attorney General, I will use the full powers of the office to achieve strong housing reforms and prosecute individuals and institutions that try to take advantage of our neighbors,” Kilmartin said.
Congressional Candidate Zaccaria Defends Position on Defense Spending
Congressional candidate Mark Zaccaria, who is running for the Second District seat, defended his position on cutting submarine production from criticism from Republican primary opponent Bill Clegg.
“I have not hesitated on my position that the Pentagon is one of those federal agencies which will have to tighten its belt. Unfortunately, Bill Clegg seeks to misrepresent my positions. The change in the Pentagon I referred to takes place over decades, not weeks,” Zaccaria said. “It is based on keeping America safe from its enemies. I would suggest that people who claim to have been in charge of corporate ethics find out all the facts before making charges.”
