RI Campaign 2010 – Cicilline Responds to Loughlin Attack

Democratic Congressional candidate and Providence Mayor David Cicilline yesterday responded to criticism from Republican challenger John Loughlin over his plan to take out $50 million in loans plug the city budget deficit.
Loughlin suggested that Cicilline did not deserve to get elected to Congress if he couldn’t balance the budget without borrowing money. But the Cicilline campaign said the deficit was a result of Gov. Don Carcieri’s plan to balance the state budget through cuts in local aid.
“With Governor Carcieri trying to balance Rhode Island’s budget on the backs of our cities and towns, the City of Providence faced deep cuts in state aid,” the campaign said in a statement. “Fortunately, the strong fiscal health that Providence has maintained under Mayor Cicilline’s leadership made it possible to hold the line on taxes and still balance the City’s budget. That made a lot more sense than raising taxes in the middle of a painful recession.”

Republican Tingle Announces Run for Lieutenant Governor
Republican Bob Tingle announced yesterday that he was running for lieutenant governor. Tingle, a Westerly resident, said he was running to save money for taxpayers and solve “Rhode Island’s illegal immigration crisis.” Tingle is a past candidate for the Second District Congressional seat and he unsuccessfully challenged Democrat Jack Reed for the U.S. Senate in 2002 and 2008.
Caprio Plans Big Campaign Rally
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Frank Caprio will hold a massive campaign rally at the Roger Williams Park Casino tonight at 5:30. Several hundred supporters have already confirmed that they will be attending, according to the campaign.
Patrick Lynch Endorsed by Nurses
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Patrick Lynch yesterday won the endorsement of the United Nurses and Allied Professionals—the largest health care union in Rhode Island, with more than 5,000 members.
Linda McDonald, President of the United Nurses and Allied Professionals, praised Lynch's work as Attorney General to fight for affordable, high-quality health care for Rhode Islanders. “The UNAP is confident that Patrick Lynch will bring this same commitment to protecting the public interest to the office of Governor of Rhode Island,” MacDonald said.
Bill Lynch Calls for Extension of Homebuyer Tax Credit
Democratic Congressional candidate Bill Lynch yesterday called for the approval of an extension for the $8,000 homebuyer tax credit for qualified first-time buyers and as much as $6,500 for some repeat buyers.
“I strongly encourage swift passage of this much needed provision which is set to expire in just nine days,” Lynch said. “This is precisely the kind of legislation that will help strengthen our country’s struggling real estate market, extend crucial unemployment benefits, and aid strapped state budgets while raising taxes on oil companies and the profits paid to managers of buyout funds.”
The U.S. Senate has passed the measure, which is now awaiting approval in the House.
