Independent candidate for governor Lincoln Chafee’s campaign struck back yesterday at a Democratic attack Web site launched last month by the Democratic Governor’s Association. Among other accusations, the Web site claims that Chafee is not really an independent because, as a U.S. Senator, he voted with President George Bush 76 percent of the time.
Yesterday, Chafee campaign manager J.R. Pagliarini said that no one who follows politics closely or lives in Rhode Island really believes that Chafee was a Bush supporter.
He noted that Chafee had opposed the war in Iraq, voted against the tax cuts, and broke with the President over his prescription drug plan. Chafee voted with Bush less times than any other Republican, he added.
“To say that he was somehow aiding and abetting George Bush is just crazy and far-fetched,” Pagliarini said. “I think the voters of Rhode Island would agree that he was the conscience of the Republicans during the Bush years.”
He added that such partisan attacks were an example of what is turning people off from politics.
Caprio Campaign Says Rally Draws 400 People
Democratic candidate for governor Frank Caprio drew more than 400 supporters to a rally at the Roger Williams Park last night, according to his campaign. The campaign said it used the event—the first of its kind in the campaign—to sign up volunteers.
“My wife and I came because we want to help Frank in any way we can,” said Caprio supporter Bill Diorio of Smithfield. “He has the right plan for Rhode Island; he knows that we can’t afford any more taxes and we need a governor who is focused on getting people back to work.”
Kilmartin Gets Nod from Nurses Association
Democratic candidate for Attorney General Peter Kilmartin yesterday won the endorsement of the United Nurses and Allied Professionals.
“Throughout his many years in public service, Peter Kilmartin has been a staunch ally of health care workers and all working people,” said Linda McDonald, president of the group.
“His commitment to thorough and effective scrutiny of proposed hospital mergers, his strong opposition to forced overtime for nurses, and his vocal criticism of excessive hospital CEO compensation give us confidence that he will be a strong advocate for the public interest as Attorney General,” McDonald added.
