Methodology

For this study, WalletHub calculated the number of elected officials in the federal government per total number of adult residents in each state during the most recent presidential and current midterm election years.

The metrics included:

-Presidential Election – Full Weight: Number of Electors in Each State/Total Population Aged 18 or Older in 2012

-Senate Elections – Half Weight: Number of Senators in Each State/Projected Population Aged 18 or Older in 2014

-House Elections – Half Weight: Number of Representatives in Each State/Projected Population Aged 18 or Older in 2014
