Republicans Say Phone Booth Days Behind Them

Friday, April 30, 2010

State Republicans may be putting their phone-booth days behind them.

Tomorrow, the Rhode Island GOP is holding a campaign school for General Assembly candidates, and organizers say they are expecting a large turnout. “The party has a number of detractors who say, ‘Oh you meet in a phone booth,’” said Rob Coupe, the executive director of the state party. “I think they would be shocked at what I … expect will be the turnout.”

Coupe said 50 potential candidates and campaign staff have registered for the event and he is preparing for a turnout of as many as 70 people. Coupe said the enthusiasm for running for office was evidence that the activism spurred by the Tea Party was bearing political fruit.

“Those people who really do want something to change are going to step up and make it happen,” Coupe said.

The candidate school is tomorrow, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mayor Scott Avedisian’s campaign headquarters, located at 1800 Post Road in Warwick. Tomorrow’s event will cover the nuts and bolts of campaigning, from putting out press releases to filing the papers necessary to declare candidacy for office. The second session of the candidate school will be May 22 and 23.
