Republicans Launch Campaign to ‘Take Over’ Legislature
Tuesday, August 17, 2010
State Republicans are launching a statewide campaign to get as many of their House and Senate candidates elected as possible so that fiscal conservatives can have a majority in the General Assembly.
Nearly one hundred Republican candidates—and a number of friendly independents—are running as part of the Clean Slate campaign. “In order to achieve the fiscal responsibility we’re looking for we need to sweep the Statehouse clean. You can’t just do it with one or two fresh faces,” said state GOP chairman Giovanni Cicione. “To fix the dramatic problems up there we need dramatic change.”
Republicans are hoping to raise $200,000 for a media campaign in the fall. So far, they have nearly $50,000, according to Cicione.

Cicione isn’t putting a number on how many General Assembly races the GOP needs to win in order to be successful. He said the party is willing to team up with independents and Moderate Party candidates to build a majority. And he expects that moderate Democrats will vote with Republicans. “We want to take over the General Assembly, but it doesn’t mean we need 51 percent,” Cicione said.
