Independent candidate Lincoln Chafee and Democratic State Treasurer Frank Caprio are neck-and-neck in Rhode Island’s race for governor, regardless of which Republican candidate they face.

A Rasmussen Reports poll of likely voters released today finds Chafee with 35% to Caprio’s 32% if John Robitaille is their GOP opponent.

Robitaille, a former top aide to current Governor Don Carcieri, gets 25% of the vote, with nine percent (9%) undecided.

If former State Representative Victor Moffitt is the Republican gubernatorial candidate, Caprio earns 35% support to Chafee’s 33%.  Moffitt nets 22% of the vote, and 10% are undecided.

According to the pollster, "This marks Caprio’s highest level of support to date. After earning support in the high 20s in February and March, he tied Chafee last month at 33%. Chafee’s support over the three months has ranged from 33% to 39%."

Robitaille has generally remained in the mid-20s throughout. This is the first survey to include Moffitt.

According to the Poll, Caprio’s Democratic opponent in the Primary, state Attorney General Patrick Lynch, continues to lag.  In a head to head with Lynch replacing Caprio: Chafee leads with 37% to Robitaille’s 29%, while Lynch trails at 19% in that three-way match-up. Fifteen percent (15%) remain undecided.

If Moffitt’s in the race, he comes in second with 28% of the vote to Chafee’s 35%, while Lynch earns 24%. Thirteen percent (13%) are undecided.

Both parties will pick their nominees in September 14 primaries.
