Question 1: Shorten the Official State Name?

The Rhode Island Name Change Amendment, also known as Question 1, will appear on the November 2, 2010 ballot as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment. The measure would change the state's official name from "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" to "Rhode Island."
What's at stake? Advocates describe the weight of the word "plantations" in the monicker, and its negative implications regarding slavery. Should the smallest state with the longest state name rewrite history? Marques Coleman and Jon Lee asked Rhode Islanders to describe their feelings about this complex issue.
