NEW: Patrick Kennedy Opposed to Legalization of Marijuana
Sunday, January 06, 2013

Kennedy, who left Congress in 2010, has joined with conservatives in the organization called Project SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana).
Kennedy's Battles with Drugs and Mental Health
During his college years, his tenure in the Rhode Island General Assembly and as a member of Congress, Kennedy battled both mental health issues and drug issues. He has been a national voice in funding and expanding mental health treatment.
Relative to Project SAM, Kennedy told Reuters, "Yes, the drug war has been a failure, but let's look at the science, and let's look at what works. And let's not just throw out the baby with the bathwater."
Other members opposing the legalization of marijuana include: Conservative commentator David Frum, who once served as a speech writer for former President George W. Bush.

The big government types (even retired ones) don't favor legalizing marijuana because:
1. They know people will grow it themselves and create an even larger cash economy than exists now -- an untaxed economy of which the government can't get a cut.
2. They don't want to dismantle the government bureaucracy that wages the war on drugs and that is loaded with well paid government employees who vote for those who keep them in business.
3. It gives citizens freedom.

“When appropriately prescribed and monitored, marijuana/cannabis can provide immeasurable benefits for the health and well-being of our patients … We support state and federal legislation not only to remove criminal penalties associated with medical marijuana, but further to exclude marijuana/cannabis from classification as a Schedule I drug.” — American Academy of HIV Medicine, letter to New York Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, November 11, 2003

Hey, without illegal drugs, we would not lead the world in jailing our citizens. Give credit where credit is due, Richard Nixon’s brainchild the “war on drugs”. Thanks Dick!

Lets look at the science? Are you serious Kennedy?
Is there a reason why one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world will not even allow a prominent university or medical center to perform trials on this harmless medicine but also threaten to pull any and all government grant funding for participating in marijuana research?
Marijuana has side effects; however, they are political and not medical.
