State Democratic Party Chair Blasts GOP
Thursday, September 08, 2011
Prior to Wednesday night’s GOP Presidential debate, Rhode Island Democratic Party Chairman Ed Pacheco blasted the Republicans, claiming Rhode Island would lose more than 30,000 jobs as a result of the candidates support for what he called “extreme economic policies.”
Pacheco pointed to new analysis conducted by the Democratic National Committee, which suggests that if the balanced budget amendment, which is supported by all the Republican candidates, was in place in 2012, it would result in the loss of 9.5 million American jobs and 31,011 jobs in Rhode Island.
Appealing To Tea Party
The state’s top Democrat said the candidates are simply trying to appeal to the Tea Party.

Possibly a second Great Depression and devastation for the middle class, small businesses, students and seniors. An economic quagmire that could last generations,” Pacheco said. “Ending Medicare and slashing Social Security. That’s the price Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul and the rest of the Republican Party are willing to pay to appeal to the most extreme and narrow elements of the Tea Party. There’s not a Democrat or Republican in this country who doesn’t think we need to get our fiscal house in order, but what this crop of Tea Party-loving Republicans has signed on to would lay ruin to our country and is beyond irresponsible."
Pacheco compared the cuts called for by the GOP to setting dynamite to a leaky faucet.
“The drastic cuts to education, health care, infrastructure, research and development, higher education, Social Security, Medicare, and job training supported by Republicans would cost us millions of jobs if the plan were fully implemented in 2012 and would ensure that we aren’t making the very types of investments we need to create jobs and be globally competitive in the 21st Century,” he said. “The Republican approach is like setting dynamite to your home to fix a leaky faucet – and these wrongheaded policy choices are the result of a Republican Party which has turned over an increasing amount of power to its Tea Party fringe.”
GOP Chair: Stop Demonizing The Tea Party
But State Republican Chairman Ken McKay called the poll laughable, saying it was conducted by the same group that told the nation that a stimulus package would keep the nation’s unemployment rate under eight percent. McKay said Democrats continue to blame everything on the Tea Party.
“This is more of the same in Democrat politics,” McKay said. “They try to demonize the Tea Party and then anyone who disagrees with them they say is in the Tea Party. These are the same Democrats that have a Senate that hasn’t introduced a budget in 1,000 days.”
McKay said Democrats are showing they are concerned about the President’s ability to get reelected.
“This is the best they can do because they are petrified someone is going to beat Obama,” he said.
Pacheco: Republican Plan Falls Flat
But Pacheco maintains that his Party can solve the country’s economic woes. He said Republicans remain obsessed with cutting everything.
“Americans want real solutions to the problems we face and they want a plan to create jobs in the short term and lay a foundation for long term economic prosperity. What Republicans are proposing falls devastatingly flat on all fronts.”
