Brett Smiley, one of the state’s top fundraisers, is moving away from building campaign war chests to focus on compliance work, GoLocalProv has learned.

Smiley, the founder of Campaign Finance Officers, has worked with Congressman David Cicilline, Attorney General Peter Kilmartin, Secretary of State Ralph Mollis, former gubernatorial candidates Patrick Lynch and Charlie Fogarty and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, but says he’s now down to only working with Taveras.

“Mayor Taveras is my last fundraising client in RI,” Smiley said in an e-mail. “I have a staffer in Illinois who has several fundraising clients.”

Last summer, Smiley told GoLocalProv that his compliance business has grown in recent years and “I am devoting more of my time to it.” He said he was planning to stay with Cicilline for the remainder of his campaign.

State campaign finance records show Smiley’s company has been paid more than $365,000 by local fundraising clients since 2007. Those figures do not include work on Cicilline’s Congressional campaigns.

According to the Campaign Finance Officers – Compliance website, Smiley’s company “can advise on and deliver to Democratic campaigns, PACs, Parties and related entities the accounting and compliance support they need to efficiently run their committees.”

Smiley remains chairman of the Providence Water Supply Board.
