NEW: O’Neill Resigns from Speaker’s Leadership Team

House Majority Whip Patrick O’Neill has resigned as a member House Speaker Gordon Fox’s leadership team, the Providence Journal is reporting.

O’Neill, who has been viewed as a potential successor to Fox, delivered his resignation letter today.

O’Neill and Fox did not immediately return requests for comment.

O’Neill’s exit means House Leadership will now need to fill three positions. Deputy Majority Leader Peter Petrarca lost his Democratic primary to Greg Costantino and John McCauley is on his way to federal prison. O’Neill does not have an opponent in the general election.
