NEW: Mayor Taveras Trails Most of City Council in Campaign Funds

Tuesday, November 01, 2011

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras will host a $75 per head fundraiser this evening at Jacky's Waterplace and as his latest campaign finance report indicates, he could use a large haul.

According to reports filed Monday, more than half of the City Council has more cash on hand than Taveras, who reported an ending balance of just $3,058.99 for the third quarter.

Council President Michael Solomon, Majority Leader Seth Yurdin and Council members Sam Zurier, Nick Narducci, Michael Correia, John Igliozzi, Luis Aponte, Terry Hassett and David Salvatore all reported larger ending balances than Taveras. Solomon, who raised more than $30,000 during the quarter, currently leads the pack with $84,678.69.

Carmen Castillo, who is widely considered the favorite to win the vacant Ward 9 Council seat later this month, also leads the Mayor with just over $5,000 in her account.

Taveras reported raising more than $25,000 during the quarter, but he spent $36,704.33, mostly on consulting fees.

The Mayor probably isn't too concerned. He has an impressive fundraising record dating back to his run for Congress more than a decade ago. Between a heated four-war Democratic primary and General Election last fall, he outraised his opponents every quarter, pulling in nearly $500,000 during the campaign.

Neither the Mayor nor the City Council face re-election until 2014.
