NEW: Mayor Taveras Raises $56,750 in 1st Quarter

Monday, April 30, 2012

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras raised $56,750 during the first quarter of 2012 and now has $154,857.06 in his campaign account, according to campaign finance records.

Taveras received $7,700 in individual and PAC contributions from Hinckley, Allen & Snyder, the law firm that counts Central Falls receiver and former state Supreme Court justice Robert Flanders as a partner.

Earlier this month, Flanders was fired as an advisor to Taveras after he suggested bankruptcy was inevitable for the capital city.

The Mayor also received a $1,000 contribution from Joseph Penza, the lawyer who is representing the the city's retired police officers and firefighters in negotiations with the city. Taveras later returned that contribution.

Taveras also returned $500 to embattled Providence Housing Authority executive director Stephen O'Rourke.

Taveras spent $33,148 during the quarter, with the bulk of his funds going to Campaign Finance Officers, the fundraising company run by Water Supply Board chairman Brett Smiley.

Taveras made just three political contributions during the quarter: a $250 donation to Senator Jack Reed's committee; a $200 contribution to State Senator Juan Pichardo and a $100 contribution to State Senator Hanna Gallo.
