Loughlin is still on active duty in Iraq, but his campaign is beginning to take form after his potential GOP primary opponent Brendan Doherty reported raising more than $300,000 in the first 50 days following his announcement.

House Minority Leader Brian Newberry is headlining the fundraiser as the keynote speaker, which will be held at Santa Maria Cultural Center in East Providence.

Loughlin’s spokesman Michael Napolitano said, "The grass roots support for John Loughlin within the GOP here in Rhode Island is extremely strong and continues to grow while John is serving his country in Iraq. Individuals contact me often and ask what they can do to participate or help."

Napolitano said the campaign is only beginning its fundraising strategy.

"Fund raising efforts began this quarter and we expect them to kick into high gear when John Loughlin returns,” he said. “This fundraising event is being held in conjunction with our direct mail piece that went out at the beginning of the quarter."
