Former Republican state Senator Beth Moura took to Facebook on Tuesday to blast select members of the Ocean State's GOP on Dr. Dan Harrop's page.

Harrop was in the running for the state party's chairmanship, but after an invalidated vote, outgoing chair Mark Zaccaria named Mark Smiley chair of the party on Sunday.

Reached Sunday, Harrop told GoLocalProv that he had heard nothing about the decision and that there were numerous errors with the ballots not just one issue.

"Your valiant effort is/was commendable, sir," Moura wrote. "But you can only swim in a cesspool for so long before you start to stink.

"I was thrilled to no longer be in the GA and my decision to stop communicating with the bigots was made nearly two years ago (while I was still in the Senate). The RIGOP is and always will be a waste of time unless certain people are no longer welcomed with open arms."

Moura said that her comments followed a Tuesday email from Harrop or his supporters, which made reference to a Republican Assembly Christmas party a few years ago where a parody skit making a joke about illegal aliens was performed.

"He's talking about the same stuff that I saw as being problematic when I was there," Moura said. "I can tell you that mocking illegal aliens at an event could be offensive to some people. My comment was more to the fact that I was there and i witnessed that exact event."

But the former state Senator, who said she is no longer active in politics, was quick to point out that only a select few members of the state party are problematic.

"There are a lot of great people in the Rhode Island GOP," she said.

"There's some people that aren't very good for the party and they make it look bad. Our lack of growth and credibility in the state is the result of that," Moura said.

"They really need to get rid of the bad apples. There are some people that ruin it for everyone."

Moura was a state Senator in 2011 and 2012, and she is a member of the Foreclosure Fight Club in Rhode Island.
