NEW: Cicilline to Announce Legislation to End LGBT Discrimination
Tuesday, March 31, 2015
U.S. Congressman David Cicilline, a co-chair fo the LGBT Equality Caucus and one of only six openly gay members of the U.S. House of Representatives issued a statement on Tuesday, March 31 on his intent to introduce legislation to end LGBT discrimination.
Cicilline's statement"
“America was founded, in part, on the idea that everyone should be treated equally and able to live their lives free from the fear of discrimination. Recent events in Indiana and around the country have highlighted that this is not the reality for all Americans. The new law enacted by the State of Indiana last week is completely contrary to these core American values and offers compelling evidence of the need for Federal protections to protect the rights of LGBT Americans.”
“I am proud to be working with Senator Jeff Merkley, in coordination with members of the LGBT community, and my colleagues in the House, on a comprehensive civil rights bill that will ensure LGBT individuals are afforded the same protections against discrimination as every other American. I am hopeful that Congress will recognize, as a majority of the American people have, that this issue is about fundamental human rights and transcends politics. I look forward to continuing this work to ensure that all American citizens can live their lives free from discrimination and intolerance.”
