Senator Sheldon Whitehouse announced that Providence would host the 2012 Netroots Nation Conference during his keynote speech at this year's event. The gathering of progressive political activists will draw media from all around the globe and is expected to bring at least $1.5 million into the Rhode Island economy.

“It is an honor to welcome Netroots Nation 2012 to Rhode Island," Whitehouse said. "This event will showcase our Ocean State and provide a much-needed boost to our economy.  A conference of this size will book hotels, fill restaurants, and bring cash to our local shops."

Whitehouse told attendees at the 2011 Conference in Minneapolis how much they can look forward to in Rhode Island next year.  "From our gourmet dining to our scenic beaches to our thriving arts scene, NN12 guests can expect a memorable and enjoyable visit," he said.

Senator Whitehouse also recognized Rep. David Cicilline for his efforts to promote tourism to the Ocean State which proved to be a contributing factor for Netroots Nation choosing its next host city.

“We are thrilled to welcome Netroots Nation to Providence in 2012," said Providence Mayor Angel Taveras. "I want to thank Senator Whitehouse and the Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau for helping to bring this exciting conference to Providence. Blogs are the town halls of the 21st century for so many who participate in the political process. We look forward to hosting the Netroots community next year."

This year’s conference brought 2,200 people to Minneapolis.  Providence expects an equal, if not larger, turn out for next year.
