Republican candidate for governor Victor Moffitt is charging his primary opponent, John Robitaille, of flip-flopping on the wind farm, after he came out in opposition to a new law that is breathing new life into the project.

The Public Utilities Commission has once rejected a contract between National Grid and wind farm developer Deepwater Wind, but now has to reconsider it again, thanks to a new state law. Moffitt said he had consistently opposed the project.

“Although I oppose this particular project,  I would support wind energy proposals that are financially sound and fair to ratepayers” Moffitt said.

He accused Robitaille of changing his position to garner favor with groups that opposed it.

The Robitaille campaign yesterday shrugged off the attack. “We’re standing by our original press release and we’re dismissing Mr. Moffitt’s criticism as a desperate campaign struggling to survive,” said spokesman Mike Napolitano.

In his original statement, Robitaille said that increasing utility costs required by the project did not make good economic sense. But if that’s true, Moffitt wondered why Robitaille had ever supported the project in the first place—since its plan had always been costly to consumers.

Napolitano said Robitaille supported the wind farm—but not the high cost. “They’re two things we want to happen. We want them to go through the regulatory process and we want them to get their costs down,” he said.
